What information do college applications ask for: • Student and Demographic Data • Know your social security number (SSN) • Know your Statewide Student ID(SSID), some college applications ask for it. • SAT, Subject Exams and ACT scores • Extracurricular Activities • Clubs, Sports, Community Service, Part Time job, etc • May require an Essay(s) • Signature – electronically • Payment (if required) • Fee waiver may be available • Academic Information (“A-G” courses) • A current unofficial transcript will help fill out applications (request in counseling office during before school/break/lunch/afterschool)

  11. “A-G” Courses ALL “A-G” COURSES MUST BE PASSED WITH A “C” OR BETTER BOTH SEMESTERS OF EVERY YEAR • On the academic part of the application, you will need your unofficial transcript and the list of “A-G” courses. • “A-G” Course List Website: www.ucop.edu/doorways • MUST include Senior Courses that are “A-G”. For courses your currently taking, in the application you will put “IP= in progress and/or PL= planned • UC’s = list all courses and grades (even the course that the student got a D in) • CSU’s = list courses and grades (list the better grade and year that the course was retaken)

  16. CSU/UC important information: Once admitted: • If you attend a CSU campus, you will be required to take the ELM and EPT Placement exams. You may be exempt from these placement exams based on how you do on the additional questions you answered on the CSTs for the Early Assessment Program (EAP) or SAT/ACT scores. http://www.ets.org/csu/about • If you attend a UC campus, you will be asked to take the Analytical Writing Placement Exam in May 2017. You may also be exempt from this exam SAT/ACT score in English/Writing or a 3 or better in the AP English Exam. http://www.ucop.edu/elwr/index.html • CSU/ UC Admission Status- check online. (December 2016 – March 2017) • Log in to the college website to look up admission decisions and do any updates on contact info. Colleges will ask you to create an online account with each campus you apply to and it is YOUR responsibility to check your online account constantly to make sure you don’t miss important deadlines. • May 1st – Statement to Intent to Register (SIR) due. • Before you graduate, do an official transcript request to notify the Registrar when and to what college you want your official graduated transcript mailed to.

California Community Colleges • Filing Period: • February – May 2017 • Los Rios Community Colleges- Apply prior to April 1st for Priority Registration • High School Diploma • Math and English Placement tests required to register for classes • Apply at: www.cccapply.org **Make sure to apply as soon as you are able to, so you can sign up for classes soon….

NCAA Clearinghouse • If you plan to play sports for a college once you graduate, you must register with the NCAA clearinghouse and make sure you meet the requirements for the Division you want to play for. • Division 1- 16 Course Requirement • 4 years of English • 3 years of Mathematics (Algebra 1/Integrated Math I or higher) • 2 years of natural/physical science (1 year of lab) • 1 year of additional English, mathematics or natural/physical science • 2 years of Social Science • 4 years of additional courses (from any area above, foreign language) • There is a sliding scale for your GPA and SAT or ACT test score. • Division 2- 16 Course Requirement • 3 years of English • 2 years of Mathematics (Algebra 1/Integrated Math I or higher) • 2 years of natural/physical science (1 year of lab) • 3 years of additional English, mathematics or natural/physical science • 2 years of Social Science • 4 years of additional courses (from any area above, foreign language) • Minimum GPA for Division 2 is a 2.00, min. SAT score is 820 or ACT sum score of 68. • NCAA Eligibility Center’s website: www.eligibilitycenter.org • When registering to take the ACT/SAT, use the NCAA Eligibility Center code: 9999 so NCAA can get your scores.

Vocational Military • Vocational schools include: DeVry, Le Cordon Blue, FIDM, etc. • Admissions Requirements: • Apply 6 weeks before planned attendance date • High School Diploma • Math and English Placement Tests • MilitaryRequirements • High School Diploma • ASVAB – recommended score of 50. ASVAB Exam offered at LRHS on October 14th and March 24th • Some branches no longer accept any on line courses, please contact the recruiter • Currently all branches of the military are giving preference to High School Seniors. If you wait until after you graduate you will be placed on a waiting list.

World of WorkPrepare For the Job Hunt • Are You Job Ready? • Do you currently have: • Picture ID • Social Security Card • Prepare a Resume • Complete an application form • Three references from non-relatives • Knowledge about contacting Employers • Knowledge about interviewing techniques • Reliable transportation • Participate in a job interview 10 Most Serious Problems of Young Workers • Absent from work too frequently • Has to be supervised too much of the time. • Takes no initiative when something needs to be done. • Isn’t very observant. • Arrives late or leaves early too often. • Doesn’t listen well. • Doesn’t consider the consequences of decisions. • Too much socializing with other workers or visitors. • Can’t accept suggestions or criticism. • Doesn’t seem to care about doing a job well.

Financial Aid 1st semester: • Look up scholarships ( a good website, that students can go on now is www.fastweb.com ), ask for letters of recommendation (make sure to give the people you are asking a letter of rec. from plenty of time) • CSS/Financial Aid Profile: certain private schools require it and there is a fee for each campus. https://profileonline.collegeboard.com • Submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) or CA Dream Act Application starting October 1st –March 2nd . You will use 2015 Income Tax information. • Create your FSA ID (it will be the students and parents electronic signature on the FAFSA) • Attend a Cash for College workshop to get additional help on the FAFSA or CA Dream Act Application. If you are planning to attend a Cash for College workshop, create an account: https://www.cash4college.csac.ca.gov/Home/showWorkshopDetail?id=1352 2nd semester: • Continue to look up scholarships, ask for letters of recommendation (make sure to give the people you are asking a letter of rec. from plenty of time) • Deadline to submit the FAFSA or the CA Dream Act application is March 2ndwww.fafsa.ed.gov • Verify / Update the information on the Student Aid Report (SAR) if you haven’t already • If the college you are attending asks for further documentation, make sure to provide them in a timely manner. • Create your webgrants4students account to manage information about your Cal Grant award

  22. What is Financial Aid? • Funds provided to students to help pay for postsecondary education expenses. • Financial Aid includes: • Grants • Work Study • Loans • Scholarships

  23. What are Grants? • A grant is FREE money. • Types: • A Pell Grant is federal free money. • FAFSA required • BOG (Board of Governors) at Community College- covers tuition. • Apply through Community College website.

  24. Cal Grant • Cal Grants are State free monies, used for tuition and/or other fees. • Cal Grant A, B, C • Grants can be used at a four year college or two year college or a technical school. • Start with the FAFSA or California Dream Act application. • We submit your GPAs electronically. • High School graduation confirmation required. Students can confirm online by using WebGrants for Students: www.webgrants4students.org • There’s a new grant program: Middle Class Scholarship Program(CSAC will notify students if they are eligible)

  25. What is WORKSTUDY? • If eligible for Workstudy- Contact the college Financial Aid Office for list of jobs that qualify. • Must apply to a job on the list. • Examples of jobs are: jobs on campus, in the library, bookstore, etc. • The student is not required to pay taxes for this type of work.

What are LOANS? • Money that MUST be paid back. • Must be enrolled at least half time. • Types of LOANS: • Student Subsidized Loan: government picks up the interest on the loan while the student is in school. • Student Unsubsized Loan: government doesn’t pay the interest on the loan. You can begin to the pay the interest as soon as you borrow the money or you can put it off paying while in school, just note that the interest will be added to what you borrowed. If you pay the interest while in school, you’ll pay less. • Parent Loans- Federal PLUS loans: Parents must apply, there’s a credit check and if granted parents start making payments right away.

  27. Financial Student Aid ID • The FSA ID is a username and password and its an electronic signature. • Start creating one for YOU and your parents also need to create one. https://fsaid.ed.gov/npas/index.htm

FAFSA or CA Dream Act Application • Fill out the FAFSA or CA Dream Act Application for the 2017-2018 school year and submit by March 2nd. • Look up your SAR (Student Aid Report), verify information and make corrections if needed. • Log in to your student account at each college you were accepted to and look up your Financial Aid Awards. California Dream Act Application • Who can apply: • The California Dream Act Application is for students who meet the qualifications of AB 540 • An eligible AB 540 student is a student who: • Attended a CA high school for 3+ years • Graduated from a CA high school or the equivalent • Enrolls in an accredited CA college or university • Must be enrolled at least half time • Maintain satisfactory academic progress • In case of student without lawful immigration status, filed an affidavit with institution stating that he/she has filed an application to legalize status or will file as soon as he or she is eligible • Website: www.caldreamact.org

Quick reminders… • Sign up for College presentations in the Career Center • CSU Application period: October 1st to November 30th 2016 • UC Application period: November 1st to 30th 2016 • Private Colleges/Universities application deadline varies by school • Community College application deadline vary by campus, usually apply 2nd semester of Senior year • Vocational school application deadline vary by campus • Fill out your FAFSA or CA Dream Act application (10/1 – 3/2) • Apply for scholarships • If you’re a AB 540 student, see your counselor for more information. • Before you graduate, fill out an Official Transcript Request Form so that our registrar mails an official graduated transcriptto the college you plan to attend in the fall • Create a resume ** Constantly check your online account for each college you applied to. Very often, this is what colleges use to communicate with you. If they request an official transcript, please fill out an Official Transcript Request form by our registrar’s office.
