  2. ◦ GHR 300 combines the theory of EFL teaching with practical experience. ◦ GHR promotes students‘ reflective practice (RP) to enable them to become a good EFL teacher. ◦ GHR offers students the opportunity to explore their theoretical EFL knowledge in the classroom context. ◦ GHR should NOT be viewed as a mini- Referandariat.   3. ◦ GHR English is separated into two fields: primary and secondary (RS/HS/IGS). ◦ In the winter term, all students attend a weekly preparation course (Vorbereitungsseminar) within their primary or secondary group. ◦ Students begin the practical phase in their respective schools at the end of the winter term. GHR 300 begins on 19th February and ends on 19th June 2024. ◦ During the practical phase, students attend a seminar with their tandem. This is not on a weekly basis (Begleitseminar). ◦ At the end of GHR practical phase, students attend a reflective seminar (Nachbereitungsseminar). How is GHR 300 English structured?   5. ◦ Studienleistungen: ◦ Attendance is mandatory. Two absences due to illness will be permitted. As only two absences can be permitted, it is advisable to obtain a doctor‘s note. ◦ Assignments during the course as well as micro-teaching sessions are mandatory as part of this course. ◦ Students will be allocated to their respective tandems for the practical phase during or by the end of the Vorbereitungseminar. ◦ Students who do not fulfill the study requirements (attendance and assignments) will not enter the practical phase. Winter term Preparation course (Vorbereitungsseminar) = 15 hours attendance + 60 hours own work GHR 300 English October 2023

Summer term: In-practice and reflective seminars (Begleit- /Nachbereitungsseminar) = 15 hours attendance + 30 hours own work ◦ Students attend a seminar with their respective tandem during the practical phase. Attendance is mandatory and two absences are permitted. Additional absences result in mandatory assignments. ◦ These seminars focus on reflective practice. ◦ The seminars are not on a weekly basis and take place on university days (2024: for English Thursdays 16 – 19 hrs.); the Nachbereitungsseminar may take place on a Friday/Saturday as a block course. Course tutors will inform students of the dates for these seminars. GHR 300 English October 2023

  7. ◦ At school, students are allocated to a mentor in their subject (teacher at school). ◦ The students should keep a portfolio to document the learning process and reflective practice during the practical phase. Content should be discussed within tandems. ◦ The first two weeks of the practical phase are spent becoming familiar with school life and to observe lessons. Students should document their observations in their portfolio as instructed by tandems. ◦ Schedule for the visits should be set within the first two weeks by the tandem team and the students are responsible for informing the school as soon as possible. ◦ Students will conduct two visits in school; the first with the LiP, the second with a LiP and university tutor. A third visit might in some cases be necessary. Two visits are mandatory and neither the lesson nor the discussion should be conducted online. Please note ◦ Students may be absent from school for max. 6 days with a doctor‘s note. ◦ Please inform school immediately of any absences. ◦ Please send sick note to CeLeB koordla@uni-hildesheim.de and inform your tandem. ◦ Please note that the practical phase begins straight after the end of teaching in winter term and that there are no exam weeks before school start on 19.02. Appointments with university tutor during practical phase ◦ Each student makes an appointment at the university with the university tutor of 45 minutes. ◦ Focus of the appointment is subject-specific educational issues during the practical phase. ◦ The portfolio should be brought to the appointment as possible basis of discussion.   10. ◦ Attendance at seminars and completion of seminar requirements (5 CPs). ◦ Completion of practical phase – 14 weeks minimum (4 CPs). ◦ Assignments in practical phase and portfolio (to be submitted four weeks after completion of practical phase) (3 CPs). ◦ Lesson plans should be presented in the portfolio as instructed by your group.   11. ◦ During the practical phase, students choose to write either a long lesson plan of a lesson (Planung einer Stunde) or an Analysis of a Lesson (Analyse einer Stunde) from a subject-specific academic and educational perspective. ◦ Specific content of assignments will be set by the respective tandems. All assignments should not be less than min. 13 FULL pages. ◦ Assignments are to be written in academic English and in accordance with the Style Guide, English Department. Students should adhere to deadlines stipulated by their tandems. The long lesson plan should be submitted no later than on day of second visit. ◦ CPs for assignment = 2 CPs.
