  3. IONIC COMPOUND • With atoms losing and gaining electrons to become stable, explains how some compounds are formed. • IONIC COMPOUNDS are formed because it is made up of positive and negative ions that have resulted from the transfer of electrons from a metal to a nonmetal

  4. Elements can bond (combine) to each other to form compounds because of their ionic states. • Elements do this by transferring electrons to complete each others valence shell and therefore making each other stable. • This happens when the opposite cation and anion attract (Law of electric Charges)

  5. These compounds are known as ionic compounds and it is generalized by metal (cation) combining with a non-metal (anion) • Another classification of compound is known as molecular compounds and this is when a non-metal combines with another non-metal. • Give handout with examples

  6. HOMEWORK • Read pages 188-189. • Do questions #2,3 page 189
