Workshop Objectives • Provide update on BCDEN Project • Look at pilot areas for Education • Outline constraints within which we are operating, e.g. budget, time etc. • Introduce workgroup to current research, case studies and projects in education • Discuss the Issues and how the use of ICT could address these • Discuss and possibly identify pilot action areas • Outline next steps

  25. Profile • ICBAN population of 550,000 – rurally dispersed • No University Campus • Several Higher Education and Outreach Facilities

  27. ICBAN Capacity ICBAN Technology Transfer Programme • Companies, groups, clusters, etc. to apply for bursaries – improve innovative capacity through technology transfer • Applications very welcome from traditional industries Advancing Innovation & Technology Transfer • Omagh College

  28. ICBAN Capacity Business ConneXions • 3 yr prog. (Nov 2002 – October 2005) funded under the Information Age Initiative. • Managed by the South-West Learning Partnership (Fermanagh, Omagh and East Tyrone Colleges). • Aims to establish an ICT based business support framework assisting SME’s in Care, Beauty, Hairdressing, Tourism and Hospitality.

  29. ICBAN Capacity Shell Technology Enterprise Programme (STEP) - • Undergraduate project-based support for small businesses. Building Bridges for Border Businesses (2004-2006) - • Fermanagh College in co-operation with Cavan IT to create a crossborder framework of support, guidance and training for retail small businesses in Fermanagh and Cavan.

  31. What has Worked in the NW? Centre Without Walls (CWW) Project • Lead Partner - NWIFHE • Provision of ICT training in the Strabane district (Approx. 2200 project participants) • Over 80% of the trainees were aged over 25 • Over 40% had no formal qualifications prior to commencing CWW training • Highly successful (received awards such as regional national training award & Irish News connecting adults awards)

Centre Without Walls INTERREG III A Project • Lead Partner – SLDC in conjunction with NWIFHE • Crossborder – targeting communities in Donegal and Strabane • Provision of IT and personal development training and taster sessions • Accredited training • Crossborder Networking days • Crossborder conferences

Outputs from Northwest Workshop • Training Needs Analysis (TNA) is key • Mistrust across the sector to discuss and share project ideas – causes overlap • Lack of communication on the success and failure of projects on both sides of border • Community unaware of up-to-date training / upskilling options in the NWCBR • Key decision makers in the NWCBR needed to ensure buy-in and success of pilots in BCDEN • Crossborder trust building and knowledge sharing through a face-to-face meeting as a key starting point
