The challenge • Only 17% of Native American/ Native Alaskan students actually matriculate to college. • Over 80% of Native students express a desire to attend college in 8thgrade. • Between 8th grade and high school graduation, a multitude of factors bar Native student success and college attainment. • Only 7% of residents in the Navajo Nation have a college degree. • The percentage of Native Americans living below the poverty line is three times greater than the national average. • The unemployment rate on reservations is nearly 80%. • Very few tribal schools can afford a college guidance counselor, an essential resource for most high school students who successfully apply to college.
