  1. Battery Waste Management Update: Producers Get More Time to Submit Annual Returns New Delhi, July 2025– In a recent development aimed at easing compliance pressure, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has announced an extension for battery producers to file their annual returns under the Battery Waste Management Rules. This move comes as part of the government’s efforts to support industries transitioning to the updated Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework. Manufacturers, importers, and brand owners (PIBOs) must file yearly returns outlining the collection, recycling, and disposal of used batteries under the Battery Waste Management Rules. These returns are essential for monitoring adherence to EPR goals and guaranteeing that spent batteries are managed in an ecologically responsible manner. New Deadline Notified June 30, 2025, was the prior due date for filing the annual returns. But because of persistent backlogs in registrations and technical issues with the centralized EPR site, the ministry has formally extended the deadline to September 30, 2025. The following are covered by this extension: Battery manufacturers and assemblers  Importers of batteries  Brand owners and e-commerce sellers dealing in batteries Regulatory Compliance Still Mandatory Although the reporting date has been extended, officials have stressed that other Battery Waste Management Rules requirements must still be followed. Producers are required to satisfy their collection and recycling goals, keep accurate records, and provide performance reports in the format specified.  Industry Response Stakeholders in the industry have praised the extension, calling it a much-needed reprieve amid the growing burden of regulatory compliance. The Battery Waste Management Rules 2022, which took the place of the previous 2001 requirements, are still being complied with by many companies. Final Word: The Battery Waste Management Rules’ deadline extension is a step in the right direction for promoting further industry involvement in EPR. But since sustainable waste management and regulatory compliance go hand in hand, battery manufacturers shouldn’t put off preparations.
