  1. L1 - OBJECTIVE: Develop an understanding of the nature, characteristics, and scope of technology as we discuss syllabus, safety and procedures . Please have a seat and quietly complete the following DRILL: On a clean sheet of notebook paper define the following four terms: Math – Science – Technology - Engineering

  2. Math – The use of numbers as tools to solve problems.Science – The study of how and why things occur in nature

  3. Technology – use of accumulated knowledge (math and science) to make tools that make work easier and improve life

  4. TechnologyIt is the practical use of human Knowledge.Technology comes from the Greek wordtecknos, which means "art"Artisans- early workers in technologyMechanic- comes from the Greek word - mechanikos, which means machine.Current namesTechnicianTechnologist

  5. Engineering – design and creation of technical systems

  6. SAFETY – It is extremely important that students always act in a safe manner. Following are basic procedures and practices students should always follow whenever students are in the Technology Lab :- Upon entering class immediately have a seat and complete daily drill. - Never touch class tools equipment without teacher permission.- Only use equipment that teacher has demonstrated.- Use tools / equipment as directed and for purpose tool is intended.- If you have a question on how to use equipment, tools or how to do a procedure ask for teacher instruction.- Report all damaged/ broken/ malfunctioning equipment to teacher.- Wear safety glasses.- No Horseplay- Always Practice SAFETY FIRST!

  7. IETC applies a threaded curriculum that has been developed to apply theories covered in Algebra and Concepts Of Physical Science. • The Baltimore County Theme Park Development Problem • On a new island, created from spoil from a channel dredging project in the upper Chesapeake Bay, an international land development company is designing a major Mid-Atlantic theme park attraction as part of a Baltimore County economic development initiative. This IETC class group of future engineers, scientists and technologists has been employed to design the technology systems and other related items that will form the final design specifications for the park.

  8. Baltimore County Theme Park Development Project Units of Study • Introduction – lab procedures – general safety. • Measurement and Drafting. • Advanced Structures / Fluids Intro: Water tower to provide water pressure for Amusement park • Mechanics introduction – Crane design to re-locate bridge.

  9. Baltimore County Theme Park Development Project Units of Study • Communications – Radio broadcast, Logo design, Screen Print T-shirt, Web Page design, Power Point television commercial.

  10. Baltimore County Theme Park Development Project Units of Study • Electricity Electronics – Neon Sign design. • Topic Investigations • Optics • Biotech, Medical, Agriculture

  11. L2 - OBJECTIVE: Demonstrate understanding of connections between technology and other fields of study as we apply math/ science skills to complete measurement exercises and quiz • DRILL: Reduce the following fractions: • A) 6/8 B)10/16 C) 8/12 D)20/16

  12. Before we discuss answer to today’s drill it is important that we spend a little more time on General Lab Safety • Last class we discussed the following important safety items: - Upon entering class immediately have a seat and complete daily drill. WHAT ARE OTHER IMPORTANT SAFETY RULES TO FOLLOW WHENEVER WORKING IN TECHNOLOGY LAB (MACHINES, HAND TOOLS, ELECTRICAL, COMPUTERS)?

  13. How many of the following rules did we get? • When working around machines with moving and/or spinning parts be sure to secure dangling jewelry, long hair, loose clothing, and remove accessories that might get caught. • When working with equipment focus on what you are doing. Do not speak to people operating machines. • Stay out of machines ‘Safety Zone’(3 foot perimeter) if you are not directly involved in operation. • Immediately report all accidents/ injuries to instructor. • Report any ‘unsafe’ conditions to instructor • Use tools / equipment only as directed and after instruction • Do not carry hand tools etc. in your pockets

  14. A few more important safety items • Tools for cutting should be sharp…Dull tools cause injuries • Wear safety glasses • Return tools and equipment to proper location as soon as you are finished using it! • Do not carry long stock by balancing it in center. • Wear an apron to protect / secure clothing • Do not put sharp tools or hot items near neighbors, face, or handle carelessly. • Do not use electrical tools or items in such a way that is likely to cause shock. • Always leave class with same number of body parts that you entered with.

  15. REDUCING FRACTIONSTerminology: A fraction is made up of two parts12 = Numerator = The top number 16 = Denominator = The bottom number* If both numerator and denominator are even numbers, divide by (2) two, until you can’t.Using the above rule check your responses to the drill.

  16. Can any one else think of another simple rule that can be used in reducing fractions?

  17. 6/8 = 3/4 B)10/16 = 5/8 C) 8/12 = 4/6 = 2/3D)20/16 = 1 ¼BONUS QUESTION: Which of the above fractions would not be found on a normal ‘American standard’ ruler?

  18. L3 - OBJECTIVE: - Demonstrate understanding of general lab safety as we complete quiz.- Complete two point perspective drawing as we draw a series of lines to specified length in order to demonstrate ability to measure to 1/16 inch • DRILL: Identify the measurements: • A) 1’ 3” + 2’ 4” • B) 5 ¾” - 2 ¼” • C) 6 1/8” + 4 ½”

  19. A HINT FOR ADDING AND SUBTRACTING FRACTIONSTHE DENOMINATORS OF THE FRACTIONS BEING ADDED OR SUBTRACTED MUST BE THE SAME (THIS IS KNOWN AS “COMMON DENOMINATORS”).Example: 2 ¼ + 3 1/8 = ? 2 2/8 + 3 1/8 =

  20. L4 - OBJECTIVE: SW identify component subsystems as we evaluate technological products in order to demonstrate understanding of CORE concepts of technology • DRILL: Identify the steps that make up the following problem solving model: C)_______ A)_____ B) ______ D)______

  21. Today’s schedule:1) Discuss answer to drill2) Read pages 30 - 40 of chapter two answer questions 1,2,4,10,12, and 13. Read pages _ of chapter 5 in order to “IDENTIFY THE SEVEN TECHNOLOGICAL AREAS and SKETCH THE PROLEM SOLVING SYSTEM MODEL” in notes.3) Reference page 226 and Follow teacher led instruction in order to learn to represent a 3-dimensional object as a multi view drawing

  22. 1A) IDENTIFY TWO POSITIVE AND TWO NEGATIVE ASPECTS OF TECHNOLOGY1B) IDENTIFY AND DECRIBE THE SEVEN AGES OF EVOLUTION OF TECHNOLOGY2) IDENTIFY AND DESCRIBE THE MAJOR COMPONENTS OF A TECNOLOGICAL SYSTEM3) IDENTIFY AND DESCRIBE THE 7 MAJOR TYPES OF TECHNOLOGY4) IDENTIFY AND DESCRIBE THE SEVEN MAJOR INPUTS OF A TECH SYSTEM MODEL.5) DESCRIBE THE THREE MAJOR TYPES OF TECHNOLOGICAL PROCESSES, THEN APPLY IT TO SEVEN MAJOR TECH PROCESSES.

  23. Introduction to Drafting • Basic Drafting tools include: • T-Square • 30/60 Triangle • 45 triangle • Drafting Scale

  24. Borders and Title BlocksDraw borders to following measurements ½ inch ¼ inch ¼ inch 1/4 inch

  25. Borders and Title BlocksDraw top of title block 1/2

  26. Borders and Title Blocks 3” 1” 1” 1” 1”
