  2. Objective: • Today I will be able to locate countries using a variety of maps. Language Objective: • Today I will explain the difference between a country and a continent using a sentence frame.

Warm Up Answer • The difference between a continent and country are: • Continents • large landmasses created by plate tectonics (breaks in the crust of the earth cause landmasses to move around). • There are only seven (7) continents on the Earth (Africa, Asia, Europe, Australia, North America, South America, and Antarctica). • Countries are found on continents. • There are 194 countries on the Earth. • Countries are created by humans and separated by imaginary boundaries.

  4. Task • Identify countries on the World Map using the correct number. • You will only identify 100 countries of the 194 recognized countries. • You need to work with a partner. • Use the maps in the back of the World History books. • First three teams to finish get extra credit.

  5. How to Read a Map • SOUTH AMERICA – this writing identifies a continent. • BRAZIL – this writing identifies a countries. • Brasilia – this writing identifies a city. • Virgin Islands (Br). – this identifies territory that belongs to Great Britain.
