  6. (2) Interaction with modelers: Arctic Biology/Ice/Ocean Modeling and Assimilation System(BIOMAS) J. Zhang & M. Steele (UW), Y. Spitz & L. Berline (OSU), C. Ashjian (WHOI), R. Campbell (URI) • Sea ice: “TED:” thickness distribution, dynamics, thermo • Ocean: “POP:” mean 22 km resol., 30 levels • Biology: • Initially NPZD model only on Arctic Basin • Later more biological compartments on BIOMAS domain • Time periods: (i) 1979-present, (ii) projections Levels (m): 5 10 15 20 25 30 36 42 50 59 69 80 98125 “NP”

  7. Sheldon J. Plankton (usually referred to as Plankton) is a fictional character and one eyed villain in the animated seriesSpongeBob SquarePants. He is a technologically savvy, deep-voiced zooplankton with one central eye—a real-life characteristic of some copepods. PLANKTON is an instrumental 5-piece band out of Stockholm, Sweden. The band was formed in 1998 by guitar players Christian and Emil, who at the time were playing in various bands around the Stockholm area. Michael Steele Polar Science Center / APL University of Washington (3) The cartoon: “Pat the Plankton!” http://psc.apl.washington.edu

  8. The cartoon: Proposal text For this proposal, we plan to hire an animation undergraduate student from the UW’s Center for Digital Art and Experimental Media to produce a 2.5 - 3 minute animation under staff guidance in APL’s Multimedia Laboratory for project coordination and script writing. The narrator will be “Pat the Plankton,” who will discuss the controls of PP in the AO, i.e. light (snow/ice, clouds, ocean stratification) and nutrients, and how this might change in future climate scenarios. The project will begin at the Year 2 Seattle PI meeting (NOW!) and end in Year 3. This animation will be accessible at the websites of APL, BLOS (www.bigelow.org), as part of its DLESE-linked educational products and linked to the BLOS web-based modules for Phytopia, a teacher-acclaimed CD-ROM teaching tool, and ASLO (http://www.aslo.org/education/ teaching.html).

  9. The cartoon: Nitty gritty Cartoon Q’s: What are the controls? Is it a documentary (possibly narrated by Pat as s/he interviews other plankton)? Or is it a story (wherein Pat has an adventure of some kind, illustrating life under the sea ice)? Distribution Q’s: How will this REALLY be used, i.e., WHO IS OUR AUDIENCE?
