  1. Sample Prompt Writing Situation: People value entertainment for many reasons. Directions for Writing: Choose a TV show that you think is worthwhile or enjoyable. Then tell why you think others should watch it.

  2. Sample Opener: Famous People Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, and Taylor Hicks all had hits that rocketed to the top of the music charts in a matter of a few weeks. Even those who rarely watch television or listen to the radio are familiar with their names. They have all captured public attention by appearing on the popular show that is known for showing off—as well as rudely insulting—people who want to make it in the music industry: “American Idol.” Watching budding singers perform, listening to the judges’ comments, and anticipating the competition results should put this widely popular television program on everyone’s not-to-be-missed list.

  3. What kind of conclusion?_________________________________ In the next few weeks Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler will eliminate scores of enthusiastic but less talented singers who will not survive Hollywood Week. Then follow weeks in which singers will be turned down, one-by-one, leading up to the season finale, which will reveal the next superstar. Who will be the country’s next Kelly Clarkson, Taylor Hicks, or Phillip Phillips? One thing is for sure, millions will tune in to find out!

  4. Sample Opener:Historical Overview In the 1990s a new concept in television was pioneered. Encouraged by the new “reality TV” shows on MTV, the networks introduced such shows as the long-running “Survivor”. However, audiences have not responded to any other reality show to the extent they have popularized Fox network’s show, “American Idol.” Watching budding singers perform, listening to the judges’ comments, and anticipating the competition results should put this widely popular television program on everyone’s not-to-be-missed list.

  5. What kind of conclusion?_________________________________ Before you know it, the 2012 season of American Idol will draw to a close, and the next rising star will be named. However, the excitement generated by the talented singers, the critical judges and the edgy competition will ensure that the show will continue its long run, possibly well into the next decade.

  6. Sample Opener:Anecdote Armed with the remote control, I settle myself into the recliner, a bowl of popcorn and a Diet Coke at my elbow. My cell goes off and I glance down to see that it’s my very best friend Mindy, who is going through the drama of a nasty breakup with her boyfriend. I know she needs a shoulder to cry on right now, and usually, I’m a great listener, but this evening I look at the clock, hesitate for a moment, and then press “silent.” I can’t talk to her right now: I have to see if my favorite singer is going to make the cut on the best show on TV, “American Idol.” Watching budding singers perform, listening to the judges’ comments, and anticipating the competition results should put this widely popular television program on everyone’s not-to-be-missed list.

  7. What kind of conclusion?_________________________________ As the final credits roll, I remember Mindy. She picks up after one ring, and I apologize for missing her earlier call. “No problem,” she assures me. “I only wanted to remind you not to miss American Idol. Can you believe they cut that awesome singer?! And did you hear what those crazy judges said about that one girl? I can’t wait to find out who wins the next round!” That proves it: American Idol is not only wildly popular, it can even take your mind off a breakup.

  8. Sample Opener:Surprising statement “William Hung, famous for his laughable rendition of Ricky Martin’s ‘She Bangs,’ has died of a heroin overdose.” This fake headline from brokennewz.com renewed people’s interest in the odd performer, who appeared in the 2004 season of “American Idol.” He is one of the many people that the show has hurled to fame, but unlike Hung and his infamous 2007 counterpart, Sanjaya, most of the performers who appear on this show are quite talented. Watching budding singers perform, listening to the judges’ comments, and anticipating the competition results should put this widely popular television program on everyone’s not-to-be-missed list.

  9. What kind of conclusion?_________________________________ It is difficult to say what surprising headlines this year’s American Idol contest will trigger. However, it is a certainty that between the talented but often quirky singers, the incorrigible judges, and the intensity of the weekly contests, American Idol will continue to be a favorite among American audiences and therefore will continue to make the news.

  10. Sample Opener:Getting right to the point “American Idol” has enjoyed continued popularity since it began. It features performers who audition for a panel of judges. Each week more singers get cut until, finally, a new American Idol is named. Over the years the show has kept its format essentially the same, so why do people continue to tune in? Watching budding singers perform, listening to the judges’ comments, and anticipating the competition results should put this widely popular television program on everyone’s not-to-be-missed list.

  11. What kind of conclusion?_________________________________ Although it has spawned copy-cat programs, such as “The Voice,” and “America’s Got Talent,” American Idol will remain the show to be watched because of its ability to launch unknowns into superstar performers, surprise the audience with the judges’ antics and off-the cuff-critiques, and offer the most riveting singing competition on television.

  12. Other “clincher” types • Connection to the world • Recommendation or call to action • Description of character, setting, or object (similar to anecdote)

  13. Now you try it: • Writing Situation: Many people consider the past twenty years to be a “technology revolution” because it has grown so much. • Directions for Writing: Think about an invention or new technology that was developed in the past two decades. Explain how it has changed people’s lives and discuss whether the invention or technology has had overall positive or negative effects on society.
