  2. So, your outline should look like this: You are writing to persuade, so remember your AUDIENCE and use evidence that will get them on your side. • Intro Paragraph: • Grabber: What does it mean to be wise? Robert Sternberg said “…the wisest people are those who look out not just for themselves, but also for others.” • Thesis: Experience, not age, makes someone wise. Sarah Gruen’s novel, Water for Elephants, and the article by IlanShrira “Positive Perception of Old Age…” show us that the wisest people are concerned with not only themselves but also with the well-being of others. • Name 2-3 main points to support your position: Sarah Gruen’s novel, Water for Elephants, and the article by IlanShrira “positive perception of old age…” show us that the wisest people are concerned with the well being of others. Go to the article and, in the margin, place an MP 1 for details that you want to use in the essay.

  3. Continued… • Body 1: Main point 1: Novel: • 2-3 supporting details/ pieces of evidence from the novel: • Give an old Jacob example that shows he believes there’s more life to live and is not giving in to the stereetypes about old people being useless or ill. • Give a young Jacob example that shows that Jacob looks out for others, as well as himself • Body 2: Main point 2: Article: • 2-3 supporting details/ pieces of evidence from the article: • Wisdom is “the application of intelligence /experience toward the attainment of the common good”. Evidence to back this up is on the bottom of pg.1 • Wise people will have positive beliefs and apply intelligence and experience. Evidence can be found middle of pg. 2 • Conclusion: Restate M.P.s and add a clincher (last profound thought on the topic). • You’re on your own here. Good luck!

  4. Think carefully about the issue presented in the following excerpt and the assignment below. • We need to remember that wisdom is not just about what we think or know, but more importantly, how we act. Simply being smart is not enough. I define wisdom as the application of intelligence and experience toward the attainment of a common good. In other words, the wisest people are those who look out not just for themselves but also for others. • -Adapted from Robert J. Sternberg, “Teaching for Wisdom in Our Schools” • Assignment: What makes a person wise? Are the wisest people merely smart or are they also concerned with the well-being of others? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.
