  3. The Philippines • Japan wanted the American controlled Philippines • American Troops led by Douglas MacArthur • The Americans struggled in the Philippines because: • Small numbers, poorly trained • America chose to focus its attention on Western Europe • Lacked food, supplies, and medicine • Secretary of War Henry Stimson heard MacArthur’s requests for more food and supplies but thought it was too risky. He said, “There are times when men have to die.”

  4. The Philippines cont. • MacArthur was forced to leave the Philippines and vowed “I shall return” • In spring of 1942 10,000 American troops and 60,000 Filipino troops surrendered on the Bataan Peninsula. • The Bataan Death March: The Japanese soldiers then forced the surrendered troops to march for 5 days and nights without food. If a soldier dropped out of line they were beaten or shot. • Thousands of soldiers died on the march. The soldiers who survived the march did not fare better in the POW camp.

  5. Island Hopping • The military strategy destroying Japan’s defenses by conquering Japan’s neighboring islands one-by-one and establishing American bases.
