Focus of LBD Certificate • To provide special education services for students with mild to moderate disabilities • Kentuckygeneral education curriculum goals • complete the required curriculum for a high school diploma • assessed through the general CATS assessments, with or without modifications

  3. Focus, cont’d • Emphasizes specially designed instruction to enable students to meet general education goals • accommodations • strategies • teaching methods

  4. “LBD” Definition Catch-all term for the teaching certificate to teach students with a variety of mild to moderate disabilities disabilities collectively called-- “learning and behavior disorders”

  5. Types of “LBD” Students LBD certification identifies the “expert” special educator to serve students with: • SLD (specific learning disability) • EBD (emotional/behavioral disability) • MMD (mild mental/cognitive disability) • Developmental delay (under age 9 years)

  6. Types, cont’d LBD teachers may also serve students with other disabilities … based on their learning needs related to curriculum and methods, e.g., • Autism • OHI (other health impaired) • OI (orthopedically/physically impaired) • TBI (traumatic brain injury) • Etc.

Not the expert for… HI (hearing impairment) served by a HI-certified teacher (deaf educator) VI (visual impairment) served by a VI-certified teacher FMD (functional mental/cognitive disability) served by a MSD (moderate to severe disabilities) teacher SPL (speech/language or communication disorder) served by a speech/language pathologist (speech therapist) However, the LBD teacher may provide some support services to above students, based on needs and the IEP

  8. “P-12”: Ages Covered Preschool (ages 3-4) - For special education/IEP services only Elementary (kindergarten/primary through grade 5) • Collaboration (with regular educator) • Resource class • Special class Secondary (middle/high school) • Collaboration (with regular educator) • Not covered to be the content teacher for core academics • Resource for support services

  9. LBD Program Design • Part 1: EDU 315 The Exceptional Child • Part 2: LBD Methods Prior to Student Teaching • Part 3: Student Teaching Semester

  10. Part 1 of LBD Program • EDU 315 taken as part of the P-5 program • Prerequisite to all LBD courses • Entering LBD candidates are expected to: • Have a C or better in EDU 315 • Own the EDU 315 text and continue to use it during LBD courses (it is a supplemental text)

EDU 315 Knowledge As a regular educator: • Pre-referral intervention processes and procedures • Referral, eligibility, IEP development processes & procedures • Admissions and Release Committee functions • Basics of IDEA-2004 and Section 504 (history, requirements) • IDEA/Kentucky disability categories (characteristics, typical learning needs)

EDU 315 Skills As a regular educator: • Prepare pre-referral interventions • Make an appropriate referral • Use regular classroom management procedures that support a range of diverse learning and behavioral needs • Help select and use appropriate accommodations for students with disabilities • Design regular education lesson plans with appropriate accommodations and modifications

  13. Part 2 of LBD Program • LBD Methods Prior to Student Teaching • 6 online LBD courses (18 credit hours) • Prior to taking LBD Praxis II tests • Field placements in LBD • LBD Praxis II Testing • Checkpoint 2

  14. LBD Field Placements • Approved by LBD coordinator with fully certified LBD teacher(s) • Elementary, middle and high school LBD levels • Each LBD course requires connections with an LBD teacher(s) • Expected to teach individuals and small groups

LBD PRAXIS II Testing In addition to the two P-5 PRAXIS II tests required for P-5 certification • Two PRAXIS II tests for LBD certification Education for Exceptional Children: • #0353 Core Knowledge (all special educators) • #0542 Mild to Moderate Disabilities (specific to LBD) • Requires careful planning to complete and pass 4 Praxis II tests in the semester before student teaching!

Checkpoint 2 Admission to Student Teaching • Portfolio • All 11 standards (Initial Teacher and Midway College) • Combined for P-5 AND LBD • Same portfolio contents as for regular P-5 • Additional LBD pieces (prepared in LBD courses) • Interview • Questions relate to both P-5 and LBD (all levels)

  17. Part 3 of LBD Program • Student Teaching Semester Courses • Checkpoint 3: Program Completion Portfolio Interview

Student Teaching Courses Includes 15 credit hours: • EDU 495 (6hrs): Regular Student Teaching for LBD Majors • Regular P-5 8-week placement • Weekly seminar with P-5 cohort (continued throughout semester) • EDU 497 (6hrs): LBD Practicum (Student Teaching) • LBD 8-week student teaching placement • May be at elementary, middle or high • (P-5 weekly seminar continues) • EDU 390 Online (3 hrs): Exceptional Students in Regular Education • With other LBD student teachers • Course is extended over the whole semester • Assignments as both a regular and a special educator
