  3. What is the PERIODIC TABLE? • Shows all known elements in the universe. • Organizes the elements by chemical properties.

  4. How do you use the Periodic Table to determine what type of substance the element is?

  5. The metals, non-metals, and metalloids are organized in certainplaces on the Periodic Table. • Color the nonmetals yellow • Color the metalloids blue • Color the metals green

  6. What makes an element a nonmetal? • Poor conductors of heat and electricity • Dull and brittle • Less dense than metals • Lower melting points and boiling points than metals

  7. What makes an element a metal? • Good conductor of heat and electricity • Shiny, malleable • More dense than nonmetals • High boiling points and melting points

  8. What makes an element a metalloid? • Their properties are in between that of a metal and nonmetal • Semi-conductors • Some look like metals; some do not

  9. What do the different columns mean?

  10. The Columns are Groups or Families • Elements with similar chemical properties • Some groups have special names • Let’s meet them!

  11. The Alkali MetalsGroup 1 • Very reactive • Cause explosions when mixed with water • Metals • Shiny • Light weight

  12. The Alkaline Earth MetalsGroup 2 • Reactive, but not quite as much as Group 1 • Metals • Shiny • Light weight

  13. The Alkaline ChalcogensGroup 16 • A.k.a. – the oxygen family • Mix of metals and metalloids • Many are found in minerals

  14. The HalogensGroup 17 • Often bond with metals from Group 1 • Very reactive • Often form salts

  15. The Inert (Noble) GasesGroup 18 • Rarely react • As you move down the column, the gases become more rare
