ECOSYSTEMS

ECOSYSTEMS. Ecosystems are dynamic interactions between plants, animals, and micro organisms and their environment. They all work together as a functional unit. Include biotic (living organisms) and abiotic (non-living things) Can be as large as a city or as small as a puddle.

  1. ECOSYSTEMS

  2. Ecosystems are dynamic interactions between plants, animals, and micro organisms and their environment. • They all work together as a functional unit. • Include biotic (living organisms) and abiotic (non-living things) • Can be as large as a city or as small as a puddle

  3. Biotic community made up of producers and consumers • Plants provide food for animals, but animals also provide food for plants because they decompose when they die. • An ecosystem cannot carry more organisms than its food, water and shelter can accommodate.

  4. Chain of Being • Any factor that affects one organism in the ecosystem ultimately affects al other aspects of that ecosystem because all are dependant on one another.

  5. Food Chain • Energy is passed from one organism to another • The flow of energy from one organism to the next is call a trophic pattern while the new energy level is called a trophic level. • Consists of : the sun, producers, consumers, and decomposers

  6. Food Web • A food web extends food chain concept from a simple linear pathway to a complex network of interactions.

  7. How Have Humans Affected Ecosystems? • Disrupted food chains, carbon cycle, water cycle • Mining • Deforestation • Pollution • Urbanization
