Understanding the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: Key Insights and Media Representation

In today's session, we'll discuss the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with a focus on media bias and representation. Please submit your "Origins" assignments. We will review PowerPoint slides and watch excerpts from the film "Peace, Propaganda, and the Promised Land." Be aware that the film contains violent imagery and offers diverse perspectives, including critical views from within the Jewish community. We will also explore the portrayal of this conflict in Canadian media and how it reflects broader international issues.

  1. GEOG 100 – Day 12 The Israeli- Palestinian Conflict

  2. Housekeeping Items • Please hand in your “Origins” assignments • Read the rest of the PowerPoint slides on your own; if we have time I will go back to them today • I will like to show part of a film from the VIU Library: “Peace, Propaganda, and the Promised Land” • The key points I would make before I show it are: • a lot of the imagery is violent, so be forewarned; • it is not strictly a Jews vs. Arab issue; over 50% of the critical voices in the film are themselves Jews; • the media bias showcased is largely characteristic of the Canadian media as well; • the Canadian government is currently even more uncritically supportive of Israel than the U.S.; • media bias in the presentation of this issue is often characteristic of many other international issues.
