  4. Starved for Solutions: Helping Patients with Eating Disorders Mrs. Deluca takes her daughter Hanna to see Dr. Kirby. She is worried that Hanna has gotten too thin. Hanna is 17 years old, 160 cm (5 ft 2 in) tall, but weighs only 37 kg (85 Ib.), a drop from 50 kg three months ago. Doctor: Hanna, what do you think is the problem here? Hanna: The only problem is that my mother makes me eat all the time, and I am too fat already. Dr.: What has been happening in your life lately? Have you gone on any trips, or have you been dating anyone interesting? Hanna: I just got back from France two months ago. I was living there as part of an exchange program for six months.

  5. Starved for Solutions: Helping Patients with Eating Disorders Dr.: What did you like about France? Was there anything that you disliked about it? Hanna: Well, I hated most of it because the women there are so skinny, and I felt that I couldn't compete with them. I tried to get down to a weight that was acceptable, but it was impossible. Dr.: Hanna, do you realize that you are excessively thin right now? This is not a normal weight. In fact, you could die at this weight. Hanna: Why are you telling me this? Dr.: Hanna, you have what is called anorexia nervosa. It is imperative that you do not lose any more weight because your life could be at risk. Can you accept what I am saying to you?

  6. Hanna: No, this is ludicrous! There is no way that Fm too skinny! Dr.: Often with anorexia, patients will experience a distorted body image. They will look in the mirror and see something totally different fromwhat the rest of the world sees. You will have to trust me that what you are seeing is not what actually exists. Do you understand? Hanna: So you are telling me that I can't trust what I see in the mirror? Dr.: That's correct. You might be dealing with some trauma, or you might be experiencing the effects of starvation. Either way, your vision of yourself is not accurate. 1 feel that you should stay in the General Hospital for a while.

  7. Mrs. Deluca: How long will she have to stay there, Doctor? Dr.: She will need to stay until her weight is at a stable, acceptable level. This means that various minerals in her body must be within normal range before she can be discharged. Blood levels of potassium and magnesium, for example, often become severely abnormal when a person loses significant weight over a short period of time. Hanna: I will go only if you promise me that you won't let me get fat. Dr.: Hanna, the first thing you should be thinking about is your own survival. You are an intelligent and beautiful person. You deserve to live way past the age of 18. We will see to it together, OK?

  8. Some facts about eating disorders; Often men or women with an eating disorder have experienced something very frightening and/or painful in their lives. Sometimes it is a result of their feeling as though there is too much pressure on them or feeling that they do not have enough control over their lives. Sometimes a person will eat large amounts of food and then stick his/her fingers down his/her throat to cause vomiting. This is known as "bingeing and purging" and is a characteristic of the disease called "bulimia.“ Some people starve themselves because they are afraid to eat. This condition is called "anorexia." Some people lose as much as half their body weight, but lesser weight loss can be just as deadly. Other people eat huge amounts of food on a regular basis. These people are usually very overweight and very depressed. This is called "compulsive overeating."
