Understanding Scalars and Vectors: Analyzing Airplane Motion in Wind Conditions

This project investigates the differences between scalar and vector quantities, emphasizing the significance of reference or coordinate systems in determining positions and velocities. Through two experimental case studies—an airplane in headwind and tailwind scenarios—we will assess various velocities: that of the wind relative to the ground, the airplane's velocity relative to the ground, and its velocity relative to the wind. By calculating resultant vectors and visualizing them with figures, we will conclude how the airplane's speed is perceived from different perspectives.

  1. Project’s title Done by: Class:

  2. Vector / Scalar • Explain the difference between a scalar quantity and a vector quantity

  3. System coordinates • Explain the importance of a reference or coordinate system in finding positions, velocities…

  4. Experimental • Study the case of an airplane travelling: • Air plane and head wind (CASE 1) • Air plane and tail wind (landing) (CASE 2)

  5. The study should include • Set the given: for case 1 • velocity of wind relative to ground, velocity of airplane relative to ground, velocity of airplane relative to wind • Calculate the resultant • Note: (choose the numbers and directions on your own) • Use a figure

  6. The study should include • Set the given: for case 2 • velocity of wind relative to ground, velocity of airplane relative to ground, velocity of airplane relative to wind • Calculate the resultant • Note: (choose the numbers and directions on your own) • Use a figure

  7. Head wind/ Tail wind

  8. Conclusion • Write a conclusion on how the speed of airplane can be viewed from different perspectives.
