  2. 2 8 7 Essay ▶Reading Comprehension 1 Winter Nights with Dumas "Hold out your hand and swear!" cried Athos and Aramis at once. Overcome by example, grumbling to himself, nevertheless, Porthos stretched out his hand, and the four friends repeated with one voice the formula dictated by d'Artagnan: "All for one, one for all." (The Three Musketeers, Chapter 9) The Three Musketeers is a novel by Alexandre Dumas, a French writer (1802-1870). It is a story set in the 17th century. It is about the adventure of d’Artagnan who meets his musketeer friends, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. They shout, “All for one, one for all” (Tous pour un, un pour tous). The story of d’Artagnan is continued in other novels also written by Dumas. Another adventure novel by Dumas is The Count of Monte Cristo. It is set in France, Italy and islands in the Mediterranean between 1815 and 1838. Its themes are justice, vengeance and forgiveness. "This treasure belongs to you, my dear friend," replied Dantes, "and to you only. I have no right to it. I am no relation of yours." "You are my son, Dantes," exclaimed the old man. (The Count of Monte Cristo, Chapter 18) In The Count of Monte Cristo, Edmond Dantes, a young and successful merchant sailor, is a prisoner in the Chateau d'If. But he escapes and is rescued by a ship. He recovers some treasure, which an old man bequeathed to him, from Monte Cristo. With it, he buys the island of Monte Cristo and the title of Count from the Tuscan Government. Then, he takes revenge against his enemies.
