  3. Describe the purpose of the lab activity • Lab activity: To study the role of an enzyme’s environment in its ability to catalyze a biochemical reaction

  4. Describe the goals of lab activity • Students will be able to: • describe 3 environmental factors that influence a biochemical reaction • read a biochemical reaction • appreciate how scientists study biochemical reactions

  5. Standards Addressed • Cell Biology 1b: Students know enzymes are proteins that catalyze biochemical reactions without altering the reaction equilibrium and activities of enzymes depend on the temperature, ionic conditions, and the pH of the surroundings

  8. Enzyme Lecture • What are enzymes? What do they do? • Answer: enzymes areproteins that catalyzebiochemical reactionsw/out altering thereaction equilibrium • Example: Amylase: in saliva starts the breakdown of food

Biochemical Reactions • Catalase carries out the following biological reaction: • 2H2O2 2H2O + O2 • Catalase speeds up this reaction without being changed by the reaction • H2O2 is the reactant, substance you start with before the reaction • H2O and O2 are products you end up with after the reaction • Catalase speeds up the reaction via a special location on the protein called an active site

  11. Reaction equilibrium • This is the point where the amount of reactants and products are no longer changing relative to each other. • Two types of equilibriums • Static and dynamic equilibriums

  12. Enzyme Lecture • Static Equilibrium • A bucket of water • Dynamic Equilibrium Water leaving the bucket as quickly as water being added to the bucket • ENYZMES ARE INVOLVED IN DYANMIC EQUILIBRIUM PROCESSES IN NATURE

Things to remember • Enzymes are a unique type of protein • Catalase speeds up the conversion of H2O2 (reactants) to H2O and O2 (products). • Enzymes (Catalase) speeds up the reaction resulting in a dynamic equilibrium between H2O2 and H2O and O2. • Catalase uses a special region of the protein called an active site to speed up the reaction

  14. Enzyme Lecture • Now let’s see a demonstration of how an enzyme’s environment can have an affect on the enzyme’s ability to speed up a biological reaction.
