1 Ask yourself: What’s it all about? Central or main idea The most important idea in the text; usually the point of the paragraph. (Sometimes but not always is the first sentence.)
Academic Vocabulary: • Central idea: (noun) the most important point that an author makes about a topic in a text. • Supporting idea: (noun) a focused explanation or argument that helps develop the central idea.
How do I find the main idea? • Look at the title and the headings. • Look at the pictures or images. • Look for words used more than once. • Reread the first and last sentence.
Remember: • The main idea is like a pizza. It IS the PIZZA! • The details are the toppings.
