  1. Week 8 June 1 - June 3 Galaxies and Gravity . I Can: Describe how gravity causes the motion of objects within galaxies.

  2. Warm up 2-minute brain dump! Tell me about galaxies using Google… Guiding questions: What are they? Where are they? How many are there? What are they made of?

  3. Primer: What is a light year and what is a black hole? How quickly does light travel? How large is the universe? What makes a black hole black?

  4. Lightyear - 6 Trillion Miles!

  5. Discovery Ed - Video As we watch, think about the following: • What force keeps our planets and stars in orbit? • What is at the center of our galaxy?

  6. When you look up at the night sky, you'll see a faint band of stars spread across the entire sky. This band of stars is our galaxy, the Milky Way. The sun is just one of about 200 billion stars in the Milky Way, which is just one of the billions of galaxies in the universe.

  7. A galaxy is a large system of stars, gas (mostly hydrogen), dust and dark matter that orbits a common center and is bound together by gravity. Galaxies come in many sizes and shapes. We know that they're very old and formed early in the evolution of the universe. About two-thirds of the known galaxies are spiral-shaped like our Milky Way galaxy. Most of the rest have elliptical (oval-like) shapes, and a few have unusual shapes like toothpicks or rings.

  8. Milky Way galaxy - notice the 5 “arms” and where our sun is located

  9. When astronomers look into the deepest reaches of the universe with powerful telescopes, they see many galaxies. The galaxies are far away from one another and constantly moving away from one another as our universe expands. Furthermore, galaxies are organized into large clusters and other structures, which could have important implications for the overall structure, formation and fate of the universe.

  10. Graded Assignment 6/1 and 6/3 This image shows the spiral galaxy NGC 5037, in the constellation of Virgo. First documented by William Herschel in 1785, the galaxy lies about 150 million light-years away from Earth. Despite this distance, we can see the delicate structures of gas and dust within the galaxy in extraordinary detail.

  11. Why do our planets orbit around the Sun? What does our solar system orbit around? 2 pts

  12. Reading: We live on a planet called Earth that is part of our solar system. But where is our solar system? It’s a small part of the Milky Way Galaxy. A galaxy is a huge collection of gas, dust, and billion of stars and their solar systems. A galaxy is held together by gravity. Our galaxy, the Milky Way, also has a supermassive black hole in the middle. When you look up at stars in the night sky, you’re seeing other stars in the Milky Way. If it’s really dark, far away from lights from cities and houses, you can even see the dusty bands of the Milky Way stretch across the sky. There are many galaxies besides ours, though. There are so many, we can’t even count them all yet! The Hubble Space Telescope looked at a small patch of space for 12 days and found 10,000 galaxies, of all sizes, shapes, and colors. Some scientists think there could be as many as onehundred billion galaxies in the universe. Are we the only galaxy in the universe? (use two pieces of evidence from the reading above) 2 pts

  13. Reading: Our Sun is one of at least 100 billion stars in the Milky Way, a spiral galaxy about 100,000 light-years across. The Milky Way galaxy is just one of billion of galaxies in the universe. The stars are arranged in a pinwheel pattern with four major arms, and we live in one of them, about two-thirds of the way outward from the center. Most of the stars in our galaxy are thought to host their own families of planets. About two-thirds of the known galaxies are spiral-shaped like our Milky Way galaxy. Most of the rest have elliptical (oval-like) shapes, and a few have unusual shapes like toothpicks or rings. The universe is a vast expanse of space which contains all of everything in existence. The universe contains all of the galaxies, stars, and planets. The exact size of the universe is unknown. Scientists believe the universe is still expanding outward. Describe 2 characteristics of our galaxy(use two pieces of evidence from the reading above) 2 pts

  14. Directions: Write the type of galaxy (shape) next to each picture. One shape will be used twice. Irregular Spiral Elliptical 4pts

  15. Small Groups CFA Re-teach Quiet Exploration Time Nasa Kids Solar System Explorer Advanced exploration: How Galaxies Work Assignments

  16. Exit Ticket: What role does gravity have in a galaxy? Google Form
