Today’s Agenda Warm Up: Thesis / Claim Directed Teaching Thesis / Claim I can write a thesis statement to convey ideas about an individual Warm-Up: What is a claim - thesis statement - of an essay? We will be writing an essay in our next unit, so let’s refresh our understanding of a thesis statement - claim.

  2. What is a Thesis Statement / Claim? To create a thesis / claim, ask: What is the prompt asking me to write about? A claim or thesis statement needs to be proven in the essay. Your thesis / claim will let the reader anticipate the body of your essay Responds to the Writing Prompt

  3. Where do I place my thesis / claim? Introduction: Hook & Central Ideas & Thesis Statement/Claim Body 1: Topic Sentence & TE & Reasoning/ TE & Reasoning Body 2: Topic Sentence & TE & Reasoning/ TE & Reasoning Body 3: Topic Sentence & TE & Reasoning/ TE & Reasoning Conclusion: Restate the thesis / claim. Add insight. Five Paragraph Essay The introduction and conclusion are reversed.

  4. Which thesis / claim is effective? Why? Prompt: Should schools be year round? My cousin attends a year-rounds school and he can never go on vacation with us. B. All schools should be year-round so students have shorter and more frequent breaks and they do not forget what they learn.

  5. Which thesis / claim is effective? Why? Prompt: Should election day be a holiday for everyone? Election day should be a holiday for everyone. B. Election day should be a holiday for everyone to help increase voter turnout.

  6. Which thesis / claim is effective? Why? Prompt: Should the legal driving age be raised to 18? Teenagers should not be allowed to drive. B. The legal driving age should be raised to 18 to give teenagers more time to practice driving.
