  2. Do Now • What type of stories do you think we will be reading in the Theme titled Discovering Ancient Cultures?

  3. Essential Question • How can understanding a theme title help you understand stories better?

Read page 354-355. • Why do you think Stevenson ants to travel? • From reading Stevenson’s excerpt, where do you think the place he wants to visit are located? • Why do you think people in the modern world find cultures of long ago fascinating? • How and why do we learn about ancient cultures?

  5. Read page 356-358. • What is a caravan? Why did people travel in caravans? • Patricia and Fredrick rode camels on their journey. What method of transportation would you use if you went on a journey? • If you could choose a place to take a journey to, where would it be? Why?

  6. Assignment • Read page 356-358. • Brainstorm ideas, images and words you would associate with ancient cultures. Make a list of words. • Preview the selections in the theme.
