  5. Vocabulary Builder • Americanize – The process of becoming American. • Curriculum – the subjects comprising a course of study in a school or college. • Immigrants – movinginto another country or region to which they are not native

  6. Booker T. Washington > Born to a slave on April 5, 1856 > Put himself through school and became a teacher. > In 1881, he founded the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute in Alabama (now known as Tuskegee University), > A political adviser and writer, Washington clashed with intellectual W.E.B. Du Bois over how to raise up the races.

  7. "W. E. B." Du Bois • William Edward Burghardt "W. E. B." Du Bois was an American sociologist, historian, civil rights activist, Pan-Africanist, author and editor. Born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, Du Bois grew up in a relatively tolerant and integrated community

  8. Niagara Movement • Insisted that blacks should seek a liberal arts education. • Founded in 1905 by W.E.B. Du Bois • It was named for the "mighty current" of change the group wanted to effect • Named after meeting place in 1905.
