The water footprint concept or « virtual water » Litres of water required to produce : • 1 kg of lettuce → 25 litres • 1 kg of wheat → 1 500 litres • 1 hamburger → 2 400 litres • 1 glass of orange juice → 170 litres • 1 ton of steel → 20,000 litres • 1 ton of plastic → 2 million litres • A car → 35,000 litres • 1 ton of medecine → 5 billion litres • A pair of shoes → 8 000 litres

  5. A few key figures Did you know that ? How is water consumption distributed (in France) Drinking Cooking Car/Garden Washing-up Laundry Toilets Baths/Showers Miscellaneous

  6. A few key figures Did you know that ? Water consumption at Savary de Mauléon High School • 2007 : 3,906 m3 • 2008 : 4,186 m3 • 2009 : 4,507 m3 • 2010 : 4,479 m3 NB : A large swimming-pool holds about 500 m3 of water. A year’s water consumption in Savary de Mauléon would fill about 9 swimming-pools.

  7. Presentation of Vendée Eau General code for territorial groupings Art.L2224-7-1 « The communes have jurisdiction over the matter of drinking water distribution. Within this framework, they settle upon a drinking water distribution scheme defining the areas served by the water distribution network. 13. Presentation of Vendée Eau Private contractors’operating zones for the distribution of potable water

  14. Presentation of Vendée Eau Origin of the water supply • 45 200 000 m3 of water produced in 2009 • 90 % surface water • 12 water dams and 10 water production plants • 5 % groundwater • 12 groundwater abstractions and drillings • 5 % water imports, mainly from Loire Atlantique

  15. Presentation of Vendée Eau Where water requirements are higher in summer Dam Dam Water production plant Water catchment Surface water collection Where the most important resources are located

  16. Presentation of Vendée Eau

  17. Presentation of Vendée Eau Public drinking water networks • 14,000 km of water pipes, from 60 to 600 mm in diameter (steel, cast-iron, PVC, HDPE, asbestos cement) • 331,000 water subscribers • 56 water towers, 25 reservoirs • 30 high pressure and chlorine stations
