  1. Greenhouse Gas Emissions accounting and benchmarking in the aviation industryAPEC aviation emissions taskforce meeting presentation 31st July, 2008Stu McKenzie, Senior Sustainability Advisor

  2. Outline • Landcare Research • Airline benchmarking project • E-Manage emissions monitoring tool • The carboNZero programme

  3. New Zealand Government Crown Research Institute Core business: the science of terrestrial ecosystems & sustainable development Vision - Quality of life and economic well-being from healthy land environments • Research programmes Provides Business Solutions based on Solid Science

  4. Specific research related to GHG emissions and climate change: • Agriculture • Biodiversity • Carbon exchange and inventory • Mitigation technologies greenhouse gas emissions • Risks and opportunities • Socio-economic implications • Sustainable export • Sustainable business

  5. Airline emissions benchmarking Two trials conducted during 2006 with the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA). Objectives: • Analyse and benchmark the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions at an individual airline and group level • Demonstrate the importance of agreed Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in benchmarking • Initiate discussion on appropriate KPIs for the aviation sector taking into consideration differing fleet profiles. • Demonstrate the benefits that an emissions monitoring tool (E-Manage) can offer for individual and group monitoring

  6. Airline emissions benchmarking Method: • AAPA member airlines were invited to submit relevant data fuel burn data • KPI data was also submitted: • Revenue passenger km • Available passenger km • Revenue tonne km • Pre and post trial surveys and discussion

  7. Airline emissions benchmarking • RTK was the most appropriate KPI • Most airlines showed a general downward trend over time • Overall group performance showed a generally inconclusive • There was considerable variation between airlines in CO2/RTK performance

  8. E-Manage A tool for measuring organisation Greenhouse Gas emissions. In addition the tool can help with: • Monitoring emissions • Managing emissions • Constructing reports Recently completed a significant software development upgrade

  9. E-Manage: how it works Organisation set up Input data Calculations E-Manage Report Manage Set targets Monitor

  10. Data Data Data Business X Fleet A Regions Sub-business Y Fleet B Fleet C Reports: Performance Benchmarks Targets Reports: Performance Benchmarks Targets Reports: Performance Benchmarks Targets

  11. Key features of E-Manage • Web-based, email linked • Multi-user access • Multiple organisation and permission levels • Reports - various options e.g. targets, key performance indicators, benchmarking, GHG emissions • Any quantitative information

  12. Benefits of E-Manage • Reduce time and costs in inventory preparation • Improve accuracy and consistency • Traceability and Transparency • Reduce audit time and costs Potential: • Industry benchmarking • Internal benchmarking

  13. The carboNZero programme • Certification programme to measure, manage &/or offset greenhouse gas emissions • Minimise your environmental impact & become more proactive • Become carbon neutral • International leading programme exceeding and influencing international best practice

  14. The carboNZero programme • Core values - credibility and integrity are at the heart of the carboNZero programme • Endorsed by the NZ government • Independent advisory panel • External audit required prior to certification

  15. carboNZero programme steps 1. Measure 2. Manage 3. Mitigate 4. Market • Verified GHG emissions inventory • Certified GHG emissions reduction • Carbon neutral status • Certification mark

  16. Recent activity • Partnership with Achilles Information Ltd • supplier management services for ~30,000 clients in 23 countries • pilot scheme for UK Utilities clients • Partnership with Conventions and Incentives New Zealand (CINZ) • Partnership with the Sustainable Business Company/Green Globe programme • Christchurch International Airport Ltd
