  1. Reactivity Series & Ease of Extraction of Al& Cu

  2. Extracting Al • Aluminium is too high in the reactivity series to extract simply by heating with charcoal • Requires electrolysis

  3. Extracting Al • Mine the bauxite ore (contains Aluminium oxide = alumina) • Purify the ore into Al2O3 • Heat into a molten mixture of Al3+ and O2- ions

  4. Extracting Al 4. Perform electrolysis. Al3+ ions are reduced by gaining 3 electrons. Red: Al3+ (l) + 3e- Al(s) O2- ions are oxidised to produce oxygen gas. Ox: 2 O2-(l) O2(g) + 4e- Overall Redox Rxn:

  5. Extracting Cu • Mine copper ore (chalcopyrite, CuFeS2 )

  6. Extracting Cu • Concentrate the ore (from 2%  25%) using froth floatation. • ore put in a large bath of water containing a detergent • Air is blown to make bubbles • Ore binds to air bubbles and floats to the top; rocky material stays in the bath

  7. Extracting Cu • Chalcopyrite ore is heated with sand (SiO2) and air to remove unwanted iron 2CuFeS2(s) + 2SiO2(s) + 4O2(g)Cu2S(l) + 2 FeSiO3(l) + 3SO2(g)

  8. Extracting Cu • Copper (I) sulfide is heated in air to form blister copper (98% pure) Cu2S(l) + O2(g)2Cu(l) + SO2(g) Trapped gas

  9. Extracting Cu • Copper is purified to 99.95% using electrolysis *Blister copper Cu(s) Cu2+
