  2. John F. Kennedy (JFK) was elected president in 1960.

  3. First televised presidential debates between Kennedy and Richard Nixon; first debate (out of four) was seen by 80 million viewers

  4. JFK had to continue the U.S. foreign policy of containment. President Harry S. Truman (1945–1953) President Dwight D. Eisenhower (1953–1961)

  5. In 1961, JFK authorized the U.S. to invade Cuba and overthrow communist dictator Fidel Castro in the Bay of Pigs invasion, but failed to do so. Captured CIA agents from the failed invasion

  6. In response, Cuba allied itself with the Soviet Union for protection from the U.S. . . . Castro with Soviet Union communist leader Nikita Khrushchev

  7. . . . and the Soviet Union began setting up nuclear missiles in Cuba.

  8. When this was discovered by the U.S. in 1962, JFK ordered a naval blockade of Cuba and demanded the Soviet Union remove their nuclear missiles.

  9. This Cuban missile crisis was resolved when the Soviet Union removed its nuclear missiles from Cuba after coming to an agreement with the U.S. Kennedy meeting with Khrushchev in 1961

  10. This crisis led to JFK’s creation of the Peace Corps to provide future support to developing nations of the world

  11. Under JFK, the U.S. space program was expanded. U.S. lands on the moon (July 20, 1969)
