Drug-Free Pledges: Support for Myself & Others. What is a pledge?. A pledge is a promise you make to yourself and to others. You are going to have an opportunity to make a pledge about tobacco, alcohol and other drugs. It needs to be a pledge you really believe you can keep.

  2. What is a pledge?

  3. A pledge is a promise you make to yourself and to others.

  4. You are going to have an opportunity to make a pledge about tobacco, alcohol and other drugs. It needs to be a pledge you really believe you can keep.

  5. Young people have different life experiences. Some may have already experimented with or used some type of drug. Their pledges might be very different from someone who has never experimented with drugs.

  6. Some of you may pledge that you will never smoke tobacco. Others may pledge that you will never use any type of drug. Still others may pledge to try to quit smoking.What’s important is that you believe your pledge.

  7. Turn to “My Drug-Free Pledge” on page 22.Take some time to complete the pledge.

  8. Some of the things we can do to help others keep a pledge include: • Encouraging them to keep it. • Be a friend and support their efforts to keep the pledge. • Talk to them about their pledge. • Encourage them to talk to a parent, teacher or counselor if they’re under stress that could cause them to break their pledge.

  9. Why is it important to help your classmates keep their pledges?

  10. Your Drug-Free Pledge • Keeping your own drug-free pledge and helping others keep their pledges makes you feel good. • Keeping drug-free pledges can help you all continue to be healthy.

  11. On a sheet of paper, write 1 way you will help others keep their pledges to be drug free. We will post these to show our class support for each other.
