Nursing in Long-Term Care Facilities: Challenges and Recommendations

This study conducted an investigation into nursing practices in 10 long-term care facilities, including 5 family homes and 5 medical and assistance services. The study found that the majority of the multidisciplinary teams were composed of nursing assistants or medical assistants, with an experience of more than 5 years. The definition of nursing was categorized into keywords such as hygiene, body care, well-being, accompaniment, comfort, and relationship/communication. Required qualities for nursing were identified as patience, empathy, and rigor. Difficulties encountered included lack of time, non-cooperative residents, and heavy physical tasks. The study highlighted the importance of nursing and observation for better understanding and personalized care. Improvement proposals included more time, staffing, resources, incorporating a playful dimension, valuing resident participation, and using nursing as a means of relationship and communication.
