Based on the timeline provided, create a graphic organizer or bubble diagram to show what countries were aligned together in 1914. Political cartoon (artifact # 19) answer the following question: a. What countries are represented in the cartoon? b. What is this cartoon symbolizing? 3. Based on the information gathered from the timeline and your knowledge of WWI, explain in complete sentences what side you think had the advantage? (use evidence from the timeline to explain your answer) Animated Map (artifact # 18) 1. Click on the link for the animated map and answer the following questions: • What was the ideal result for Germany if the Schilleffen plan was a success? • Why is most of WWI considered a stalemate? (use the animated map and vocab. to help you) • What is important about the battle of Verdun? • What country came in later in the war to assist the Allied powers (Triple Entente)? • Where did most of the fighting take place during WWI? (use specific places) • What does “armistice” mean? When did the armistice occur?

  2. Propaganda Posters: Each nation that fought in World War I used propaganda posters to influence public opinion. Posters were created by the governments to justify the war and to instill fear in their enemies. Portrayed on these posters include themes such enlistment, patriotism, and self sacrifice. 1. Analyze the set of propaganda posters by answering the questions below. a) What aspects of war are reflected in propaganda?  b) What techniques were used by governments to persuade people in wartime?  c) Based on evidence, what technique do you think is most effective? (Make sure you include factual information to support you answer) d) Do you think you would be influenced by these posters? Why or why not? (Make sure you include factual information to support you answer) e) Pick one poster: Describe who the poster is aimed at, and what message is being relayed in the poster. First-Hand Accounts • Read “All Quiet on the Western Front” (artifact #13) and answer the following questions. Click on the mouth for an audio recording of the passage. a. Why does Paul speak to the dead French soldier? b. What does Paul mean by “We always see it too late?” 2. Click on “Interview with G.N. Francoeur: artifact # 14 a. What does G.N. Francoeur say was the biggest struggle for new soldiers? b. How did veteran soldiers help these new soldiers stay alive? c. Describe how life was for soldiers in the trenches according to G.N. Francoeur.

Answer the accompanying questions related to the material you read. a) Name the 8 main types of weapons used in WWI. b) Define artillery. c) Why do you think that machine-gunner crews were more likely to be killed by the enemy than their fellow foot soldiers? d) e) What is a Zeppelin? Why do you think they were easy targets? f) Why were tanks unsuccessful war machines in WWI?

  4. g) How did this war change the way men fought in battle? h) Identify at least 2 ways weapons/war machines have changed since WWI? i) What piece of weaponry or tactic did you find most interesting or shocking? Why? (Provide evidence from the artifacts to support your answer.) Trench Warfare 1. Read through the artifacts #s 1-4 and watch the accompanying videos 2. Using the information you have acquired complete the “Letter from the Trenches” activity. Make sure you read the DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY! Activity: USE a SEPARATE piece of PAPER Imagine you are a young soldier sent to fight on the Western Front during World War One. a. Describe your experiences in the trenches in a letter to your parents. You should include all of the following words in your letter. -Trench, Dug out (digging out), No Man’s Land, Barbed Wire, Mud, Machine Gun, Lice, Flies, Rats, Smell, Gas, Gas mask, Rifle, Soldier, Rations, Bombing, Trench Foot Helpful sentence starters: “So many innocent lives have been lost…” “ The trench is horrible, but it gives u somewhere to rest…” “I will never forget these terrible conditions…” “ It was so awful, I can hardly bring myself to write about it…”
