  1. Welcome Back, Students: Freshman English I & 8th grade Language Arts Beverly VanGundy ~Teacher (Quiz Bowl coach, too)

  2. Moggie 9 Peanut 17 My Family Rob- Husband Heather-sister Me Bill-dad Rocko Deborah-mom My Friends

  3. Qualifications for teaching • Graduated from Newport High School ’99 • Graduated from Arkansas State ’04 • Have logged hundreds of hours of professional development in everything from Co-Teaching to Pre-AP, and educational technology • Love to read! (most important, I think)

  4. Goals for my students • Prepare you for 10th grade English • Improve writing and reading scores • Impart the importance of education in today’s world • Help you better understand the world we live in and what positive contributions you can make to it • Instill confidence in writing and literary analysis through practice and feedback. • Prepare you for the workplace • Inspire you to do your very best in all things

  5. Rules • Behave like ladies and gentlemen at all times. • Respect everyone's beliefs, and opinions. • Follow all directions: written or verbal • All rules in the handbook apply at all times. • Have all supplies every day. • Use academic English in writing and when discussing literature. (no text abbreviations, or inappropriate language)

  6. Grading • I grade on a total points system. • student points / points possible = student average • Extra points will be made available many times. Take advantage. • Conduct is part of the grade. • Buzzer activity is part the grade. • Late or make-up work will be accepted up to 5 days after assignment. • Effort = Success

  7. Procedures/Routines Procedures are the way things will be done in my classroom. After a while you know them by heart, and they become routines.

  8. Entering/Exiting the classroom Entering the classroom • Enter the classroom in an orderly fashion. • Be in your seat ready to work before the bell rings. • Sharpen pencils, get out materials, take care of personal needs BEFORE the tardy buzzer sounds. Leaving the Classroom • The buzzer does not dismiss you, I do. The buzzer just lets me know when to dismiss you. • I will dismiss the class, when it is quiet. The faster you quiet down, the faster you will get to leave. • After I've dismissed you, you will leave in an orderly way.

  9. Pencils/Pens • Pencils/Pens (Blue or black ink ONLY!)- Have one of these EVERYDAY! An artist can’t make art without paints, clay, stone, etc. A carpenter can’t make a table without a hammer and nails. The point is you need your tools to get the job done!

  10. Class discussion/questions • If you have a question, raise your hand and be recognized before blurting out. • If you know the answer to a question or want to add to the class discussion, raise your hand and be recognized before blurting out. • Make sure your questions/comments are appropriate to the classroom and topic. (I tend to get off subject myself so we’ll work on this one together.)

  11. Tardiness • If you are not in your assigned seat working on your buzzer activity, then you are tardy. • If you leave the room before the buzzer and don’t return before it sounds, then you are tardy. • The names of tardy students will be written down on the daily detention hall list. • Don’t cause a disturbance when entering the room tardy. • Don’t make tardiness a habit. You won’t have time to make up the buzzer activity.

  12. Turning in Papers • Work will be accepted one of two ways. • You will turn your work in the correct tray on the student work table. • You will pass your work up to the front of your row where it will be handed to me. • If you put your work on my desk, it will not be graded.

  13. Buzzer Activity • Worth 5 points a day. 25 points possible but only 20 are required, so that means 5 bonus points a week are possible. • Should be located on the overhead projector screen. • Work quietly and quickly on this activity as you will only have 5 minutes to complete this task.

  14. Miscellaneous Procedures/Routines • Announcements-Listen to announcements. No talking. • Discipline Referrals- Write ups will be carried to the office by the person who was written up. I expect you to read it on the way. I don’t hold grudges because we all have bad days, so when you come back you get a “do-over”.
