Temperature Measure of the average KE of particles in a substance • Adding or removing energy usually changes temperature • Temperature is proportional to KE of atoms and molecules (internal energy) • Ideal gases: depends only on temp • Gases w/2 or more atoms, liquids, solids: depends on other properties • Temperature meaningful only when stable (thermal equilibrium) • Matter expands as temperature increases
