Heat. Why is it colder in the night than in the day?. The sun is the greatest heat source in the world. As the sun comes up, it warms the world. As the sun goes down, the heat is taken away and it cools off. What will happen to this cold snowman throughout the day as the sun warms it up?.

  2. Why is it colder in the night than in the day? • The sun is the greatest heat source in the world. • As the sun comes up, it warms the world. • As the sun goes down, the heat is taken away and it cools off.

  3. What will happen to this cold snowman throughout the day as the sun warms it up? The warmth of the sun will cause the snowman to melt.

  4. What would happen to the temperature of the boiling water in this kettle if I added ice cubes? The coolness of the ice cubes would change the temperature of the water from hot to lukewarm.

  5. How is the change in temperature of the snowman and the boiling water related? • The temperature of both the snowman and the boiling water changed to a temperature that was not really cold or really hot, but rather somewhere in the middle.

  8. How does heat move from one object to another? Put a metal spoon into hot water. At first the spoon is cool, but it gets hot after being in the water. Thermal energy moves from the hot water to the cool spoon. Thermal energy moves when their particles bump into each other after they touch. CONDUCTION!!!!! How??? Particles in the hot object move faster than the particles in the colder object. The faster, hotter particles give some of their energy to the slower, cooler particles. Then the slower particles speed up and get hotter.

  11. A cooler is an insulator. • The molecules in an insulator are far apart. This helps prevent heat from flowing in or out.

  12. Conductors Definition Material in which thermal energy moves easily

  13. A pot is a conductor. • The molecules in a conductor are close together. This allows the heat to move to all parts of the pot and the stew in the pot.

FIRE • What does a fire need to burn? • Oxygen (air) • Fuel • Heat •     Fire needs three things to start and burn: • Oxygen - That's why fires don't usually start under water or in the vacuum of outer space. • Heat - The heat could come from sunlight, a spark, friction, or another fire (like a match). • Fuel - There has to be something to burn - paper, wood, gas, grease, or many other things. •     Removing any one of these three things will cause the fire to go out.
