  2. What is The Broad Prize? The Broad Prize for Urban Education is an annual $1 million award that honors large urban school districts nation-wide that demonstrate: … the greatest overall performance and improvement in student achievement, while reducing achievement gaps among ethnic groups. This year's prize covers the time span from 2007-2008 through 2010-2011

  3. How it Works… • 75 largest urban American school districts are eligible (the list can be found at www.broadprize.org) • Student achievement data from these districts is analyzed • Four finalists are selected by the Broad Prize Review Board (including nationally acclaimed statisticians, researchers and education leaders) • Qualitative site visits are made to the finalist districts • The winner is selected by the Broad Prize Selection Jury (including former U.S. Secretaries of Education, former governors, university presidents, union leaders, and CEOs)

  6. Why Palm Beach County Schools? A greater percentage of Hispanic students reached advanced academic levels in Palm Beach County - more than in other Florida urban districts - and at faster rates  In 2011, the percentage of Hispanic students performing at Levels 4 and 5 ranked in the top 30 percent statewide compared to Hispanic students in other Florida districts.

  7. Why Palm Beach County Schools? Higher graduation rate than other urban districts nationwide and bigger increases over time for Black and Hispanic students • Palm Beach County’s 2009 graduation rate ranked in the top 20% of all 75 Broad-Prize eligible districts. • Between 2006 and 2009, the Black student graduation rate increased 21 percentage points, the Hispanic student graduation rate increased 13 percentage points, and the district’s overall graduation rate increased 18 percentage points.

  8. Why Palm Beach County Schools? A greater increase in the percentage of Black students participating in college readiness exams than in other urban districts nationwide Between 2008 and 2011, participation rates on Advanced Placement exams by Black students in Palm Beach County increased 8 percentage points.

  9. The Broad Site Visit Four-day visit to Palm Beach County scheduled for Tuesday, May 29 through Friday, June 1, 2012 The site visit team includes: • A team of 5 experienced researchers • A photographer • A journalist

  10. What Happens During the Site Visit? The site visit team: • Gathers extensive documentation (over 400 documents submitted at the district level) • Visits six schools, selected according to a Broad rubric • Conducts interviews with focus groups (chosen from a master list by the Broad researchers) : • principals (60) • teachers (60) • assistant principals (20) • instructional specialists (20) • non-certified staff (20) • school counselors (20)

The site visit team gathers evidence of: • Teaching and Learning • District Leadership • Organizational Structure and Climate By looking at: • The why and how behind the data • Practices that are aligned to our outcomes • Post graduation analysis of our former graduates

  12. What Happens During the Site Visit? A Structured Schedule of District Interviews: • Superintendent • School Board Chair and Vice Chair • Chief Officers and Assistant Superintendents • Area Superintendents • Directors of Curriculum & Instruction, Finance, Human Resources, Assessment, Research and Evaluation, Federal Programs, Facilities, Technology, Student Services, and Professional Development • Union Representatives • Business and Community Partners

Six (6) School Visits • Wynnebrook Elementary School - Media Event • Rosenwald Elementary School • Palm Springs Middle School (student /parent focus group) • Odyssey Middle School (parent focus group) • Boca Raton High School (student focus group) • Glades Central High School

The Broad Prize Winner The winner of the 2012 Broad Prize • Announced Tuesday, October 23rd in New York City at the Museum of Modern Art • Winner receives $550,000 in college scholarships for high school seniors who will graduate in 2013 The three remaining finalist districts will each receive $150,000 in college scholarships
