  1. Welcome To Back To School Night Mrs. Lynch Pillow 3rd Grade

  2. Morning Arrival Our school day starts every morning at 7:35 with an assembly. On Thursdays, we celebrate “Think Fitness Thursday” with a workout let by Ms. Mikluencak. On Fridays, we sing the school song. We would love for you to join us at assembly, but remember anytime you come to the school, you must stop in the office for a visitor’s pass.

  3. Going Home I would like to stress that your child must go home the way you have specified in their paperwork. If there is any change you must send a note. You may not call to make this change unless there is an emergency. This is for the safety of your child. Without a note, your child will get on the bus, or go to daycare as specified.

  4. Thursday Folders Every Thursday, you child will bring home a blue Thursday Folder. This folder contains important information for you as well as any graded work for the week. It is very important that you look through these papers and sign the folder. There is also a space for you to write me a note if you have any concerns.

  5. Behavior Management In our class we have a Color Chart that we use to track our behavior. After three verbal warnings, the green card must be turned to blue. This is a warning. If misbehavior continues, the color change continues to yellow, then red. You will get a note home from me explaining the misbehaviors if your child receives a yellow or red card for the day. You must sign this note and send it back the next day. There is a 10-minute time-out for a yellow note and a loss of recess with a trip to Mrs. King’s office for a red note.

  6. Parent Conferences We have already started our beginning of the year assessments in math and language arts. I will be prepared to conference with you as soon as next week. Be thinking about when you can meet with me. I have conference sheets available tonight. Please fill out the conference sheet with a first and second choice. I will respond by sending a note home with your conference time.

  7. STARR What is STAAR?The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, or STAAR, will replace the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) program beginning in spring 2012. The STAAR program at grades 3–8 will assess the same grades and subjects as are assessed on TAKS. Third grade will be tested in reading and math.

  8. STARR Why is there a new assessment program for Texas students? The Texas Education Agency (TEA), in collaboration with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) and Texas educators, is developing a new assessment system in response to requirements set forth by the 80th and 81st Texas legislatures.

  9. STARR What are the most significant differences between the STAAR assessments and the TAKS assessments? Increased rigor to assess skills at a greater depth Time limit of 4 hours The STARR reading assessment will place a greater emphasis on critical analysis rather than literal understanding. The students will be given separate answer documents instead of scorable test booklets.

  10. STARR • The Bottom Line: • This is a learning year for all of us on the STARR • I will teach and expect my students to learn just like in years past. The TEKS have not changed. The way they are tested has.
