  1. Welcome to Back to School Night English 8 Mrs. Egleston Room 214 peglest@hartdistrict.org

  2. Standards Based Curriculum • Reading • Writing • Language Conventions • Listening and Speaking

  3. Reading 1.1 • Analyze idioms, analogies, metaphors, and similes to infer the literal and figurative meanings of phrases.

  4. Word of the Day • Each Monday there is a the new list of 5 words • We practice them throughout the week in various ways including hearing them used in classes and on the morning announcements • Every two weeks we take a quiz over the definitions and spellings

  5. Word of the Day • Incipient: (adj.) a beginning or early stage; just begun • Serena’s incipient party plans included a live band and some carrot cake.

  6. How much homework time will my child need? • That can vary from child to child. • We suggest that students will need to spend 30 minutes per day per class. • Four team classes: two hours • That can be broken up during the afternoon/evening hours • Best time to “memorize” is just before going to sleep

  7. Accelerated Reader • Hundreds of titles to choose from in our library, the public library or our local bookstores • Each student is required to earn 10 points a quarter • Any additional points earned will go towards extra credit

  8. What if my child needs to miss a class? • Upon returning to class, student needs to get the “Agenda Book” and copy ALL agenda items for the day that they missed. (Remember: that class can not be re-taught in two minutes.) • The student needs to make up any reading/class work/homework that was missed.
