  2. Today: Monday, Sept. 9 • Journal Writing • We get our textbooks tomorrow, will be beginning Short Stories. • Today: Elements of a Short Story.

  4. Definition of a Short Story • Tells us about a single event or experience. • They are fictional. (not true) • It has a beginning, middle, and end. • Short Stories make an impression on the reader.

  5. Elements of a Short Story • We will look at these in detail: • The Elements of a Short Story include: • Setting • Plot • Characterization • Theme • Point of View

  7. Setting • Setting tells the reader where and when the story takes place. • When reading, we pay attention to: • a) Place- where is the action of the story taking place? (geographical location) • b) Time- when is the story taking place. (historical period, time of day, year, etc.)

  8. c) Weather Conditions– Is it rainy, sunny, stormy? • d) Social Conditions- What is the daily life of the character like? Does the story have speech, dress, or customs of a particular place? • e) Mood or Atmosphere- What feeling is created at the beginning of the story? (Is it bright/cheerful or dark/frightening?)

  9. Group Work Activity: Find the Setting! In groups of 3 or 4, open the envelope provided. *You will find opening paragraphs of various short stories. *One student reads the opening paragraph, then as a group, discuss, and determine the setting of each beginning of the short story. *In 10 mins, we will come back together as a large group and discuss.

  11. Plot • The plot is the sequence of events in a story. • The plot is a planned series of events having a beginning, middle, and end. • There are 5 parts to the plot of a short story: • a) Introduction – The beginning of the story where the characters and the setting are revealed.

  12. b) Rising Action – This is where the events of the story become complicated and the conflict in the story is revealed. • c) Climax – This is the highest point of interest and the turning point of the story. The reader wonders what happens next; will the conflict be resolved or not?

  13. Falling Action- The events begin to resolve themselves. The reader knows what happens next and if the conflict was resolved or not? • Resolution- This is the final outcome or untangling of the events in the story.

  14. Plot Diagram • Complete the Plot Diagram.
