Setting • Setting is the TIME and PLACE in which a story occurs.
Characters • Who is involved? • What are their personalities? • How are they connected? • Main characters vs. secondary characters • Dialogue is key!
Conflict • There are 5 types of conflict: • Person vs. person • Person vs. self • Person vs. nature • Person vs. society • Person vs. unknown (ghosts, robots, etc.)
The PLOT • Exposition = Background info • Rising action = Series of events (or struggles) driving the plot forward toward the climax. • Climax = The TURNING POINT of the story • Falling Action = Series of events that work out the conflict • Resolution = The portion of the story that in which the conflict is resolved. It brings the story to a satisfactory and complete end. • Denoument = French for “The unraveling”. It’s the Scooby Doo ending.
Theme • The lesson about life or humanity that the author is trying to get across through the events in the story. • It IS NOT a topic (like love or friendship)
