Objectives 2010/2011 Positioning of EDTNA/ERCA towards an international concept EDTNA/ERCA will provide a platform to allowInternationalmembers to take active part in educationaland research activities inorder to improve theglobalquality of renal care and disseminate scientific results of the Association. This isan ongoingstrategysince 2008.

  24. Introduction • Older people has increased worldwide and so are the health problems related with ageing. 2. Previous studies have indicated that healthcare providers do not enjoy taking care of the elderly due to poor attitude. 3. Attitudes towards older patients significantly influence nurses’ practice. 4. No such exploration on renal nurses’ attitudes towards older people has yet been carried out.

Aims Purpose: identify and describe the attitudes of a sample of nurses toward older people and examine the relationship between their personal characteristics and their attitudes. • Attitude: “the perception of a person towards a human being, an object or a condition, which is developed by the person’s experiences and defines his or her reactions” (Chountoumadi & Pateraki, 1997). • Attitude contains three parameters: emotions, knowledge and the way of acting (Joy et al., 2000; Soderhamn et al., 2001).

Materials and methods Research Design: cross-sectional between-subjects Sample: • Nurses working in adult renal units (haemodialysis units, peritoneal dialysis unit, nephrological units or transplantation units) • Participants will be approached at national level, by National Associations in renal field • Power and effect size analyses will be conducted retrospectively • Inclusioncriterias: able read the language of questionnaire and who will be willing to participate in this study • They can fill in the questionnaire both at the working place or private level (i.e. during national conferences)

  27. Survey instruments: 1. Kogan’s Attitude Towards Old People Scale (KOAP or KOP): 34 items regarding older people (Kogan, 1961), about residential patterns, cognitive style, personal appearance, personality and discomfort with older people, evaluated on a 6-points Likert attitude scale. Possible score: 34-238; higher total scores indicated a more positive attitude. KOAP is a self-administered scale. 2. A questionnaire with questions pertaining to participants’ demographic, social and educational details.

  28. Translation procedures • All translation processes should follow Garyfallos et al. (1991) model of translation for maintaining equivalence:forward-and back-translation, evaluation of the translated version by a panel, testing of the translated version with bilingual nurses, and validating by an expert panel who must be also bilingual. • Versions available: English, Greek, Portuguese, Swedish, Italian.

  29. Procedure: data collection will be conducted over a 6 months period. Questionnaires will be distributed at national level, using the system more profitable for the national association: e-mail, normal mail, fax or hand distribution during educational events. Questionnaires will be collected at national level. Data analysis: data will be input at national level in an Excel file and sent to coordinators. Data will be analyzed by EDTNA/ERCA using SPSS at a significance level of 0.05.

  30. Deliverables • PowerPoint presentation with study results will be distributed to all participants to their use at National level. • Presentation of study results during the EDTNA/ERCA Conference in 2011. • Publications in the EDTNA/ERCA News and in the Journal of Renal Care. • Book about care of older people in renal care, ready for Ljubljana Conference in 2011.
