Summary • The SC is an incubator to explore new technologies and create SG’s • Two SG’s have been created from this SC • Radio Resource Measurement • High Throughput • Do we need liaisons to each of these SG’s? • Potential Future Discussions • Forum to review UWB as a new 802.11 PHY • Call for submissions to determine appropriate power levels and bandwidth to achieve WLAN parameters (i.e 100 m) with UWB • Petition FCC for relaxation of rules to achieve these objectives • Forum to extend UNII bands to match Europe • Increase bandwidth by 450 MHz Tim Blaney, Commcepts

  5. Radio Resource Measurement SG In May, a motion to form a new IEEE 802.11 Study Group called the Radio Resource Measurement Study Group (RRMSG) was made. Approved in the WNG SC 54/4/6 Approved in WG Plenary 72/12/17 Purpose: To investigate the feasibility of adding mechanisms for monitoring and reporting radio and MAC status information. Rationale: As the number and size of wireless networks grow there is an increasing need to monitor network status and health from a central administrative location and provide managed services.   6. High Throughput SG In May, a motion to form a new IEEE 802.11 Study Group called the High Throughput Study Group (HTSG) was made. Approved in the WNG SC 44/1/0 Approved in WG Plenary 80/1/16 Purpose: to investigate the feasibility of providing throughputs of at least 2x greater than the existing 802.11 standard. Rationale: There is a never ending demand for higher data rates. The existing MAC and PHY can be further extended to realize significant speed improvements. To minimize scheduling conflicts within 802.11 the first HTSG meeting will start in the September 2002 session Tim Blaney, Commcepts

Japan’s Lower 5.0 GHz Bands • Issues for 802.11 (11-02/480r2): • 2.5 MHz channelization authorized for 5 & 10 MHz channels • 5 /10 MHz channels: 4.900 – 4.950 GHz and 5.030 – 5.091 GHz • 20 MHz channels centered: 4.920, 4.940, 4.960, 4.980, 5.040, 5.060 & 5.080 GHz • Considering experimental operation in low 5 GHz this year • IBSS prohibited in these bands • Independent Basic Service Set (No P-to-P, must use AP) • Minor changes to 802.11, 802.11a and 802.11d to meet Japan’s proposed regulatory requirements for low-band 4.9-5.0 GHz operation Tim Blaney, Commcepts

WNG motion:To bring the following motion to the WG Move to investigate and to draft a PAR and Five Criteria to extend 802.11, 802.11a and 802.11d, as necessary, to the Japanese 4.9GHz-5GHz bands in the next ninety one days WNG: Unanimously accepted and after a Working Group confirming vote in the September 802.11 interim meeting, empower the Working Group to forward them for approval at the November 2002 IEEE 802 Plenary WNG: Unanimously accepted Tim Blaney, Commcepts

Discussions on the Access Control Mechanisms for WLAN NG • Yasuhiko, Inoue (NTT): 11-02/446r0 • Reference Point: HDR > 100 Mbps • TDMA, CSMA methods assessed • Based on single input, single output system (no MIMO) • CSMA based protocol will be a better solution for WLAN Next Generation (NG) Tim Blaney, Commcepts

WIG Scope Draft proposal (The wording is by no means the final proposal) • To be an integral part in the production of a generically applicable interworking standard for WWAN and other public networks. The standard is to be applicable for IEEE 802.11 family, MMAC HiSWAN family, and ETSI HiperLAN/2 • To be the point of resolution for ETSI, IEEE and MMAC on issues related to interworking with WWAN and other public networks. • To be the single point of contact for the above mentioned WLAN standards on questions related to interworking with WWAN and other public networks.
