What is Puberty?
  • The time when a person begins to develop certain traits of adults. Usually between the ages of 12-18.
  • During puberty, your body will grow faster than any other time in your life, except for when you were an infant.
  • When your body reaches puberty, your brain releases hormones that start the changes of puberty.
  • Testosterone is responsible for the male changes and estrogen & progesterone for female changes.

  • Girls begin puberty usually between 8 and 13 years old.
  • Guys begin puberty usually between 10 and 15 years old.
  • Some people start puberty a bit earlier or later.

  • Your body is suddenly growing quickly.
  • This happens over a period of 2 to 3 years.
  • Legs and arms tend to grow first.
  • Girls usually start their growth spurts 2 years earlier than boys.

  • Some people grow 4 or more inches a year.
  • Girls reach their full height @ about 16 or 17 years old.
  • Boys reach their full height @ about 19 or 20 years old.

  • Guys & girls both begin to grow hair under their arms & in their pubic areas.
  • Hair becomes longer, thicker, heavier, & darker.

  • Your hormones affect the glands in your skin by causing them to produce chemicals that smell.
  • Keeping clean is a good way to lessen the smell.
  • Using deodorant every day can help keep body odor in check.

  • In addition to sweat glands your body has oil glands.
  • During puberty the oil glands produce extra oil clogging pores & causing pimples/acne.
  • Acne can break out on your neck, upper body & on your face.

  • Keep your face & hair clean.
  • Remove all makeup before bedtime.
  • Don’t squeeze or scratch your pimples.
  • Drink lots of water & use non-oily moisturizers & makeup.
  • Clean washcloths, towels, makeup sponges & brushes often.

  • The cerebrum (thinking part of your brain increases memory & cognition (the ability to reason & think out abstract solutions).
  • The frontal cortex grows which enables you to plan, strategize and have better judgment.
  • The cerebellum grows which enables you to coordinate thinking better.

  • The purpose of breasts is to produce milk when a woman has a baby.
  • Breasts begin to develop @ as early as 8 years old. For others @ age 13.
  • Breasts can continue to grow slowly into the early twenties.

Girls start their period from age 8 to 16. The average age is 12.

A menstrual cycle begins on day one of the period. It ends on the day before the next period starts.

Girl’s cycles can be from 23 to 35 days long. The average cycle is 28 days.

Girls usually ovulate (release an egg into the fallopian tube) on day 14 of their cycle.

  • If the egg is not fertilized, it breaks up.
  • The uterus doesn’t need the endometrium, so it breaks it up too.
  • It turns it into a lumpy liquid with blood which exits down the vagina & out of the vaginal opening.
  • This flow of blood is a period.
  • A period can last for 2 to 7 days.

  • The purpose of testicles is to produce testosterone & sperm.
  • At puberty, testicles begin to grow larger. When they reach their full size, each one will be about as big as a unshelled walnut.
  • Testicles hang outside of the body in the scrotum because sperm must be kept at a cooler temperature than the rest of the body.

  • A guy's voice will start to change somewhere between the ages of 11 and 15.
  • At puberty the larynxgrows bigger. This causes the voice to deepen.
  • Part of the larynx can stick out of the neck at the front of the throat and forms the Adam's apple.

  • An erection is a hardening of the penis that occurs when sponge-like tissue inside the penis fills up with blood. Usually, an erection causes the penis to enlarge and stand away from the body.
  • Nocturnal emissionsalso called “wet dreams” are when a boy ejaculates while he’s asleep.
