  2. Puberty is… • All the changes that your body goes through to make the transition from childhood to adulthood • It’s caused by hormonal changes in your body

  3. Hormones • Chemical substances released by the pituitary gland

  4. Who, What, When… • GIRLS • Puberty starts for most girls at age 10 or 11 • The pituitary gland sends hormones that tell the ovaries to • produce estrogen and progesterone • Release eggs each month

  5. Girls • Hormonal changes cause: • Breast development • Hips widening • Body hair • menstruation

  6. Who, What, When… • Boys • Puberty begins for most boys from the ages of 12 to 13 • A hormone called testosterone is released from the testes • Sperm production begins • Pubic, facial and body hair grows • Genitals enlarge • Muscle development • Voice deepens

  7. Why are guys taller than girls? Boys start their puberty growth spurt later than girls but continue to grow for a longer period of time

  8. EMOTIONS! • Hormones don’t just cause physical changes • Feelings toward the opposite sex • Emotional rollercoaster
