Who is he? • Born in 1958 in Winnipeg, MB • A Canadian hero • Legend • Diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma in right knee in 1977 • Osteogenic sarcoma is a form of bone cancer • Had right leg removed 6 inches above the knee • Motivated to change lack of cancer research in Canada • He launched run across Canada to raise money and awareness for cancer called the ”Marathon of Hope”

The “Marathon of Hope” • 4 800 km of training • Fox began at Atlantic Ocean off St. John’s • April 12 1980 • Ran 42 km each day despite weather condition • Sept 1 chest pains forced him to postpone the run after 143 days • He was sent to hospital in B.C. • Doctors discovered cancer has spread to lungs • Terry Fox died June 28 1981 • $24.17 million raised on first year

  5. Caring/Selfless • After seeing little care for cancer patients • Cared enough to make difference • He thought he was done with treatment • Sought out to improve it for others

  6. Determination • Could have been discouraged • Worked hard to walk again • Only took him six weeks • Trained for countless hours • Succeeded by passing goal

  7. Brave/Courageous • Many speculating won’t make past New Brunswick • Courageous enough to continue • Made it to Thunder Bay • Forced to postpone run • Brave enough to believe it was going to be better

  8. Accomplishments • Youngest in Order of Canada • First “Terry Fox Run” was held on September 13, 1981 • 300,000 Canadians • $3.5 million raised in 760 sites • In 2010 more than $553 million raised

  9. 2008, 2 million participants from 28 countries • Including: Afghanistan, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Malaysia, France, Belgium and the United States • Terry Fox foundation organized in May 1998 • Helped fund about 1,100 projects in Canada so far with many results • Terry Fox is one of the greatest heroes of all-time
