Network Structure • Network will utilize the star topology • Server will operate on a Windows OS • Server will be located on 2nd floor • Each floor will be on a separate subnet • Computers can operate without network connection using a fat-client • Network will use a router and three switches • Each device will be connected by CAT-6 Ethernet cable

  4. Company Requirements • Network must be able to handle 100 users • Maintain 10 extensively used applications • Incorporate read-only user accounts • Network must be secure • Establish an effective firewall • Data must be backed-up and protected • Design a disaster plan

  5. Network Structure - Layout

  6. User Access • Allows you to set certain privileges for each employee • Restrict users from accessing sensitive information • Allows only approved users to perform a desired task • Keeps the network secure

  7. Group Access • Provides a group of users with the proper tools needed to perform their job • Prevent low level employees from changing company data • Is a quick and easy way to control your network • Allows you to assign a series of functions to a particular group

  8. Security • Construct a safe room for the server • Incorporate network monitoring • Anti-virus software • User Passwords • Proxy Server • Restrict internet access • Remove disk drives from user computers

  9. Firewall • Prevents outside intrusion • Controls what actions can occur on the network • Is easy to maintain • Restricts ports or IP address from activating • Prevents users from performing certain tasks

  10. Disaster Plan • Install a RAID 6 back-up data storage device (5 HDD System) • Set up an additional RAID 6 back-up device in a secured remote location • Back-up generator • Scheduled maintenance times • Protocols for system repairs • Procedures during a natural disaster

  12. Summary • The network will be based on the star topology • Will provide user andgroup level accounts to designate employee privileges • The network will have a back-up device that stores data on and off-site • The disaster plan will provide a means to recover from a unforeseen event
