Types of Diversity • Genetic diversity-involves the range of all genetic traits, both expressed and recessive • Species diversity- # of different species that inhabit a specific area • Ecosystem diversity- range of habitats that can be found in defined area composed of both biotic and abiotic components
Natural Selection • How organisms evolve • Shows what organism has adapted, survived, reproduced, and pass it on to off springs in new environment • Without a change in environment, evolution nor natural selection would occur
Stabilizing Selection • Affects the extreme of the population • Most common from of natural selection • Individuals that deviate too far from normal conditions are removed
Directional Selection • Affects the extreme of the population • Do very well in future generations
Disruptive Selection • Acts against individuals that have the avg condition • Favor individuals at the extreme ends • Population is almost split in two • Evolution occurs
Evolution • Change in the genetic composition of a population during successive generations as a result of natural selection acting on yhe genetic variations among individuals and resulting in the development of new species
Speciation • When segments of a population of one species become so isolated that gene flow stops • 3 types of adaptive radiation: • General radiation-species develop new abilities to reach new parts of the environment • Environmental change-species that can survive in radically changed environment and branch into new species • Geographic isolation-isolated ecosystems can be colonized by a species that undergoes rapid evolution
Convergent Evolution • Process whereby organisms not closely related to each other independently acquire characteristics while evolving in separate and sometimes varying ecosystems
Parallel Evolution • When 2 species evolve together at the same time and in the same ecosystem and acquire similar characteristics
