  2. BACKGROUND • Kakadu National Park is in the Northern Territory of Australia, 171 km southeast of Darwin. • It covers an area of 19,804 km2 • The name Kakadu comes from the word Gaagudju, which is the name of an Aboriginal language formerly spoken in the northern part of the Park.

  3. Native flora and fauna • Birds arrive in their millions and fill the trees while for many of the 60 different species of mammal resident in the park. • Kakadu's flora is among the richest in northern Australia with more than 1700 plant species • Responding to the extreme weather conditions experienced in the Park, many animals are active only at particular times of the day or night or at particular times of the year.

  4. There are 74 different species, marsupials and placental mammals. Some of the animals are Kangaroos, wallabies and wild dogs

  5. There are more than 10,000 species of insects. Some of them are grasshoppers, beetles, flies, termites, butterflies and moths, bees, wasps, ants, dragonflies and damselflies, caddis flies,
