The Hazardous Communications Act The Right to Know Law • The federal regulatory standard requires all employers to inventory and label chemicals in the workplace and to inform and train workers about hazards they encounter on the job. • Read labels • Study MSDS • Use proper equipment • Follow Safety precautions

Emergency Management • Each Hospital has an master Disaster Preparedness Plan to promote sound, orderly activation of the hospital and to mobilize its resources in response to a sudden influx if casualties or emergency need. • Code Blue: Cardiopulmonary Arrest • Code Grey: Disaster • Code Black: Bomb Threat • Code Pink: Pediatric/Infant Abduction • Code Purple: Missing Adult Patient • Code Orange: Hazardous Chemical Exposure • Code Red: Fire • Code Green: Disturbance or Combative Person • Code White: Active Shooter

  8. Infection Control Its everyone’s responsibility to prevent the spread of communicable diseases, drug resistant organisms and other infectious diseases within each healthcare system.

Standard Precautions • These are practices with all patients regardless of their diagnosis or presumed infection status. • All blood and body fluid is treated as possibly infectious. • It is your responsibility to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). • Wash hands • Wear gloves • Wear goggles • Wear masks/faceshields • Wear gown if you come in contact to your body • WATCH FOR SHARPS!

  12. Student Health Status and Transmission of Contagious Illnesses • Students are not to attend clinical if they are feeling ill and/or having symptoms if an Influenza-like illness. • The student will be asked to leave the facility if it is determined they are ill.

  13. Cultural Competence in Health Care • The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) “views the delivery of services in a culturally and linguistically appropriate manner as an important healthcare safety and quality issue.” • The American Medical Association (AMA) defines cultural competence as “ the knowledge and interpersonal skills that allow providers to understand, appreciate, and care for patients from cultures other than their own.”

  14. Sexual Harassment • Sexual Harassment is a form of sex discrimination that violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. • Title VII applies to employers with 15 or more employees. • This includes ALL students.

Patients Rights and Responsibilities • A Patients Bill of Rights of 1973 (revised in 1992) was adopted by the American Hospital Association (AHA). • Contributes to more effective patient care and be supported by hospitals, medical staff, employees, and patients. • Bill of Rights applies to all patients.

  16. HIPAA • Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act • Regulations require that individual’s medical information be kept secure and private.

  17. Abuse and Neglect • Abuse-mental, emotional, physical, or sexual injury to a child or a person 65 years or older or an adult with disabilities or failure to prevent such an injury. • Neglect-failure to provide a child with food , clothing, shelter, and/or medical care, and leaving a child in a situation where the child is at risk of harm. • Neglect if a person 65 or older or with disabilities-includes taking SS or SSI checks, abusing joint checking account, and taking property and other resources.

Restraints • Freedom of restraints is a patient right. • RESTRAINT IS ANY MANUAL METHOD, PHYSICAL, OR MECHANICAL DEVICE, MATERIAL IR EQUIPMENT THA IMMOBILIZES OR REDUCES THE ABILITY IF A PATIENT TO MOVE HIS OR HER ARMS, LEGS BODY OR HEAD FREELY. • Behavioral Health Restraint- The restriction if patient movement for the management of violent or self-destructive behavior that jeopardizes the immediate physical safety of the patient, a staff member or others.
