  1. Histoplasmosis Although histoplasmosis, a fungus, can present acutely as a systemic condition, common chorioretinal atrophic scars seen around the disc, macula are thought to be due to previous histoplasmosis--hence the name "presumed" ocular histoplasmosis (POH). Since most infections are not symptomatic, POH can be a common finding-1.6% prevalence especially in the Mississippi Valley. A punched out scar with variable amount of pigment is common. In addition, peripapillary scarring can also be present. Presumed ocular histoplasmosis - there arewhite punched out lesions (arrows) in theposterior pole around the disc and macula. There is variable amountsof pigment associated with these white lesions.
